Volleyball: Coach DeLuca Joins PCA For National Girls And Women In Sports Day

On Saturday, January, 28, Coach Ruth DeLuca of Gordon Volleyball joined almost 70 girls and a host of college, club, and recreation coaches from all over the Seacoast Region to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Portsmouth Christian Academy in Dover, N.H.

The event provided participants an opportunity to experience sports not always available to them such as volleyball, soccer, field hockey, and basketball.

Following an intriductory speech from UNH Women’s Basketball Coach Maureen Magarity, participants were broken into small groups to learn the basics and new skills in each sport.

“The event is a celebration of opportunities these girls have in sports today, while recognizing Title IX which turns 40 this year. We wanted to give the girls a chance to try a new sport or two that might encourage them to participate. If we were able to encourage a few of the girls to go out and try a new sport after today, then I would see this day as a huge success,” said John Egan, Director of Athletics at PCA. “The day was about giving them a positive experience with great coaching in each of these sports.”

DeLuca further commented, "
This event was a reminder to me of what a great privilege it is to play sports. The girls who participated were eager to learn and their enthusiasm was inspiring. John Egan and PCA did a great job organizing the event and I look forward to partnering with them again in the future."
