Scots Rack Up CCC Awards, Arning Named Senior Scholar Athlete

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Senior pitcher Wes Arning (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) headlined a program record six Fighting Scots named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference All Baseball teams. Arning was named Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year by the conference for his good work both on the field and in the classroom.

Student-athletes from all nine institutions that sponsor baseball in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) were represented on the 2015 All-CCC Baseball Team. In addition to the all-conference team, winners of five major individual awards and the team sportsmanship award were also selected.

Salve Regina freshman Alex Perry was selected CCC Player and Rookie of the Year. Endicott's Nick Quattro was tabbed CCC Pitcher of the Year, while Western New England's Matt Anziano and Gordon's Wesley Arning were honored as CCC Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year.  Curry's Dave Perdios was chosen as CCC Coach of the Year. Eastern Nazarene College and Western New England University were the recipients of the Team Sportsmanship Award.

Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC baseball coaches.

Joining Perry (designated hitter) and Quattro (pitcher) on the first team were catcher Nick Crivello (Curry), first baseman Steve Buckley (Western New England), second baseman Eduardo Colmenares (Western New England), third baseman Joe Haley (Salve Regina), shortstop Kevin Marciano (Western New England), outfielders Cam Farnham, (Endicott),  Ryan Kelly (Salve Regina) and Doug Milne (Western New England), and pitchers JJ Branch (Endicott) and Troy DeLeon(Roger Williams).

Second team selections include catcher Chris Travers (Roger Williams), first baseman David Neil (Salve Regina), second baseman Harry Oringer (Endicott), third baseman Spencer Madden (Nichols), shortstop Alex Smith (Gordon), outfielders Cameron Fiorentino (Eastern Nazarene), Mark Fitzgerald and Addison Tarr (Gordon), designated hitter Tyler Weninger(Wentworth), and pitchers Tyler Campo (Roger Williams), David Cherry (Western New England) and Thomas Fitzpatrick (Curry).

Joining Arning (pitcher) as third team selections were catcher Jake Mailman (Wentworth), first baseman Travis Pullen (Gordon), second basemen Justin Wagner (Eastern Nazarene), third baseman Scott Ouellette (Wentworth), shortstop Jeremy Wagner (Eastern Nazarene), outfielders John Arens (Curry), Dean Demers (Gordon) and Matt Hardy (Nichols), designated hitter Anthony Serina (Endicott), and pitchers David Griffin (Curry) and Kyle Pheland (Salve Regina).

Arning has been a stellar contributor on the field, in the classroom and in the community.  Sporting a 3.8 grade point average as a psychology major with a minor in biblical studies, Arning is preparing to attend Virginia Theological Seminary in the fall. A winner of both the Presidential Servant Leadership and the Eric Liddell Sportsmanship awards, Arning also earned acceptance to Oxford University.

A member of the CCC All-Academic team each year he has been Gordon, Arning posted a 2-4 record as a senior, while leading the Fighting Scots with a team-best 3.29 ERA. His 1.95 ERA in CCC play ranks ninth in the league. In 38-1/3 innings of work this season, the talented righthander registered 23 strikeouts and walked just four.  He also became the all-time leader in victories with a win against Endicott.

In addition to his academic and athletic accomplishments, Arning also spends time working with the homeless in Nashville and teaching a class for inner city single mothers on spirituality and faith.

Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) led everyday players in average for the second consecutive season, posting a .327 mark heading into Tuesday's action. The junior shortstop overcame a tough start to the season in the field and turned 12 double plays this year. Smith had a team-high 35 hits and 22 runs, while also contributing four doubles, two triples and a homer.

Outfielders Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) and Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) joined Smith on the All-CCC Second Team. Fitzgerald approaches the finish of a solid two-year career in Wenham after hitting .299 through a majority of the regular season. Fitzgerald finished third in the conference in home runs with five this season and second on the Scots with 18 RBI. The senior split time between outfield, second base and pitching this season, earning three wins on the mound with a 4.29 ERA.

Tarr is one of only six freshmen to be named to the postseason awards list after giving the Scots stability in center this year. The speedy outfielder put out 44 hitters this spring with one outfield assist. At the plate, Tarr impressed with an average just one point below Smith for the team lead. He had 30 hits this season, good enough for second on the team, and 15 RBI. He also displaced good patience at the plate with 14 walks and only nine strikeouts.

Gordon also placed three players on the Third Team, Arning, Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.).

Pullen closes out two years as a Scot while hitting .289 this spring and four home runs. The power hitter slammed two against Western New England to aid his team to a sweep of the Golden Bears for the first time in program history. Pullen led the team with 20 RBI and added four doubles as well. He was tops in fielding percentage of everyday players, making only one error to 143 putouts.

Demers, a sophomore transfer, developed into a solid offensive-defensive option for the Scots as the season wore on. A good average in conference play built up his average to .287 and powered out three pitches this year. He also finished third on the team in RBI with 16.

Gordon heads to Milton, Mass. on Thursday for the opening round of the CCC tournament against Curry.
