WENHAM, Mass.—Fresh off the heels of a successful Operation Christmas Child campaign, Gordon's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) finished the fall semester with its 3rd annual food drive. Over 40 student athletes from a host of different teams came together to collect food by going door to door at the Gordon College residence halls in the first week of December.
Gordon SAAC has seen growth in terms of participation and outreach over the past three years, culminating with its most successful food drive to date during this holiday season. The Fighting Scots collected 430 food items during the one-night drive, which is almost 200 more than they collected during the first installment of the event two years ago.
"The student-athletes who have given their time and focus to SAAC have without a doubt had an intangible effect on the greater student-athlete body and overall energy surrounding athletics in and around the Gordon community," said SAAC Director and women's basketball coach Lauren Wolfinger. "Their continual involvement and hard-work has not only been important to the growth of SAAC, but also to their own college experience. I'm grateful for those who have contributed and excited to see what else SAAC can accomplish through service to those on and off our campus."
All of the food was donated to the Salvation Army in Beverly.
The Christmas season events are just a handful the community service focused group participates in throughout the year. Within the last calendar year, SAAC has been a pertinent presence in the North Shore area, ranging from raking leaves to leading mental health awareness initiatives. A couple of Gordon SAAC members also participated in a Special Olympics event sponsored by the Commonwealth Coast Conference, which is currently up for an award from the NCAA.
