Tod Murphy was hired as the 33rd head coach for the Gordon College Men's Basketball team in June 2009.
Murphy has quickly become one of the most decorated coaches in the history of the Gordon basketball program. In eight seasons, Gordon has made the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship game three times, winning two. During the 2013-14 season, Gordon won its first ever NCAA tournament game over a favored Babson squad before bowing out against eventual national runner-up Williams College in the second round.
On January 7, 2016, Murphy notched his 100th career victory at Salve Regina.
Murphy joined the Scots after previous stints as an NCAA Division I assistant coach at both the University of California - Irvine (six seasons) and the University of California - Riverside (two seasons). At Irvine, Murphy was the top assistant. His responsibilities included director of recruiting, offensive coordinator and principal scout.
Prior to becoming a coach, Murphy experienced a storied career as a player. He still ranks second all-time at UCI in both career scoring (1,778 points) and rebounding (837 boards). As a senior he earned Honorable Mention All-American honors from the Associated Press. He was inducted into UCI's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. After graduating with a degree in economics, Murphy led the Albany Patroons to the Continental Basketball Association title and was selected Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. He then played forward on the first Minnesota Timberwolves club in 1989, winning the team's Defensive Player of the Year Award and leading the NBA in fewest turnovers per minute. Over Murphy's four years in the NBA he completed stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons. Following his NBA days Murphy played for several top international clubs, including teams in Italy, Greece, Spain and Japan.
Murphy and his wife Kelly have three daughters, Annie, Lacey and Kylie. His brother, Tim, is an assistant coach at Idaho.
