3/20/12 Hope Tie-Dyed With Smiles: Gordon PIT Teams With Hippies For Hope To Visit Tufts Floating Children's Hospital

Hippies For Hope
At first glance, you would never think it’s a hospital. On the morning of May 10, Mechelle Brown, director of the Gordon College Kids Club, Ashlie Busone ’14, founder of the non-profit Hippies for Hope, Brian Lane ’15, and I arrived at the eighth floor of Tufts Floating Children’s Hospital in Boston bearing buckets of tie-dyed t-shirts. Over 40 students came out to cheer on the baseball team as they took on the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy on March 20. The 6-5 extra inning win was celebrated by the somewhat unusual fan support.

After a yearlong absence, the student fan section, The PIT, has been revived and reinvented thanks to the work of Kristian Kasiguran ’15 and Megan Dodd ’12.

“It was something that was missing at Gordon,” said Ginny Daugherty ‘14.

Kasiguran is taking on a leading role in reintroducing the PIT while Dodd is heading up social media and publicity.

“The PIT is all about building our school spirit and getting all of the students excited about Gordon athletics,” said Dodd.

Formerly the PIT only made appearances during the winter months at men’s basketball games but now there are bigger plans in the works. According to Dodd, the PIT’s new aim is to be at every home game for every sport with a significant group of students cheering.

“The PIT is about school spirit and being a proud fan,” said Kasiguran. “We want to raise support for other teams because they deserve it.”
