Junior Bailey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after Gordon's 3-0 week.

Much of Balmer's importance to the Gordon Field Hockey team cannot be measured in the postgame box score. The junior has been a standout defender since her freshman season, but has been an even consistent force this year. While the offense has struggled at times, Gordon's defense has kept the team in close games throughout the season and Balmer's presence has been a major reason why.

Perhaps her biggest contribution thus far came in a 1-0 home win over Roger Williams on Tuesday. Gordon clung to a narrow one-goal lead in the second half when the Hawks put a perfect ball on net with Shannon Hicks out of the goal. Balmer backed up her goalkeeper and timed a swipe perfectly to keep Roger Williams from tying the game.

The Fighting Scots more than doubled its season win total, going from two to five, while outscoring their opponents 15-1 last week.
