Scots Finish Season Strong At New England Regionals

On the road in Brunswick, Maine for the New England Regionals hosted by Bowdoin College, the Fighting Scots saved some of their best performances for last as several runners posted their best times of the 2011 season.

The women were led by Emily Urquhart (Fr./White River Junction, Vt.), who dropped 1:17 from her last race to finish third among Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) runners and 92nd overall with a 23:46 finish. Her performance today was the seventh highest finish ever at the NCAA Regional meet and places her as the fourth-fastest 6k female runner in school history. Following closely behind were Allison Lynch (Sr./Holliston, Mass.) (147th/24:33), Kelcy Rich (Sr./Hudson, Mass.) (152nd/24:37), and Katie Hakanson-Stacy (Jr./East Longmeadow, Mass.) (163rd/24:45), each of whom ran some of their best times to finish off the season on a high note. Rounding out the top five for the Fighting Scots was Samantha Goedeke (Jr./Villa Park, Ill.)(204th/25:26), who improved every race this season and dropped almost a minute off her time from the previous race. Additionally, Amy Holcombe (Sr./Minocqua, Wis.) finished off the final race of her Gordon career with a great effort in one of her best races of the season (220th/25:42), while Rachel Stalker (Fr./Burnt Hills, N.Y.) completed the Scots' effort with a 26:32 result. Overall, the women's team jumped up eight spots from last year to finish 26th out of 51 teams (third of all CCC competitors) with a score of 758, improving 254 points over 2010.

Said Head Coach Andy Shaw of the women's effort, "The goal every year is to run our best races when it is most important and we did that again this season. All the women should be extremely proud of their effort today and all year."

The men were led by Josh Porizky (Jr./Groton, Conn.), who posted the best race of his entire season today for the Fighting Scots with a 128th-place, 27:39 finish. Following closely behind was Levi Miller (Sr./Coopersburg, Pa.), who dropped 39 seconds off his previous best time today to break the 28 minute barrier in his last race (162nd/27:51). Perhaps the race of the day on the men's side, however, went to Andrew Kwiatkowski (So./Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who dropped over a minute from his previous best to run his fastest race ever as a Fighting Scot, coming in 194th at 28:31. Dwight Huseland (Fr./Lebanon, N.J.) also set a new personal record on the day with a 29:25 time, while Jed Meyers (Fr./Medford, N.J.) (281st/31:03) finished off the scoring for Gordon in his best race of the year, earning his first finish in Gordon's top five. Rounding out all runners were Brad McCollester (Fr./West Chester, Pa.) at 31:16 (286th) and Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) at 32:02 (297th). As a team, the men moved up one spot from last year, finishing 34th out of 48 teams and improving their team score by 20 points.

"Almost everyone who ran today had their best race of the season and there is nothing more that I could have asked for from this great group of men," said Shaw. "Considering that almost the entire top seven from last season were not on the team this year, it is quite an accomplishment to have improved at this race today. We should return a lot more runners next year and today's race will help build the foundation for the years to come."
