In game one of the Gordon College Winter Classic against New England College, the Fighting Scots fell to their former conference foe, 63-50, to move to an even 1-1 on the young season.
With NEC netting the first two points of the game and steadily adding to that lead with sharpshooting from the field, the Scots trailed by as many as nine but rallied to within three at various points throughout the opening 10 minutes of play. That trend continued through the half, with the Pilgrims establishing a 10 point advantage over their host at the midway point.
Unfortunately for the Scots, however, that would be as close as they would get, as NEC would pull away behind the efforts of forward Rachel Williams (Sr./Chapel Hill, N.C.) en route to claiming the 13-point victory.
Williams had a commanding outing for the Pilgrims, recording a double-double with 18 points and 19 rebounds, while guard Kayla Lawlor (Fr./Coco Beach, Fla.) had 11 points, six assists and five steals and forward Taylor Burgess (Fr./Randallstown, Md.) contributed 10 points and five rebounds to the winning effort.
For the Scots,
Brooke Kratche (Fr./Chagrin Falls, Ohio) posted an impressive 16 points, five rebounds and
Clancey Adams (So./Simsbury, Conn.) and
Catey Marshall (Sr./St. Johnsbury, Vt.) netted 10 apiece on the night.
The Scots will host Lyndon State on Saturday, November 19 at 3:00p.m. on day two of the Classic. NEC, now 2-0 overall, will play Newbury for the second time this season at 1:00p.m.
