HENNIKER, N.H.—New England College women’s basketball set a school record with their best start in program history grabbing their eighth straight victory beating the visiting Gordon College Scots 62-49 Wednesday evening.
With the win the Pilgrims remain undefeated on the season improving to 8-0 overall, while the loss drops the Scots to 3-4 on the season.
New England College would build an early 16-5 run but Gordon would respond as the Scots would use a 9-0 run cutting the lead to 16-14 with eight minutes remaining in the opening half. The two teams would battle evenly through the remainder of the first half as the Pilgrims would head into halftime up 28-22.
Gordon would tie the game at 30-30 just five minutes into the second half and grab their first lead of the game up 42-40 with 7:44 remaining in regulation. The NEC offense would have an answer as the Pilgrims would use a 16-0 run to regain the commanding 58-44 lead with just three minutes left to play. Gordon would get within 11 points late but the Pilgrims would finish the game outrebounding the Scots 38-24 solidifying the 62-49 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Rachel Williams (Sr./Chapel Hill, N.C.) who led all scorers with 19 points, including 9-for 12 from the foul line. NEC’s Danika Johnson (Jr./Port Angeles, Wash.) chipped in 13 points, while Taylor Burgess (Fr./Randallstown, Md.) finished with 10 points.
Leading the way for Gordon College was
Leanna Tallamy (Fr./Wantage, N.J.) who finished with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Gordon’s
Catey Marshall (Sr./St. Johnsbury, Vt.) was the only other Scot in double-figures with 13 points.
NEC returns to action on Friday, Dec. 9 when they host conference opponent UMaine-Farmington. Gordon will hit the court on Saturday, Dec. 10 when they host non-conference foe Lasell College.
