Vikings Sail Over Women's Tennis, 8-1

Salem, MA --  Salem State stretched their win streak to open the season to three games as the Vikings easily defeated the Gordon College Fighting Scots, 8-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Central Campus Tennis Courts.

Salem State is now 3-0 on the year while Gordon College remains winless at 0-4.

Salem State won the first two doubles matches as Lauren Turenne (Reading, MA) and Michelle McEwen (Billerica, MA) defeated Jessie Dupré (North Billerica, MA) and Sarah Hickey (Stony Brook, NY), 8-1 while Carly Muniz, (Gloucester, MA) and Melissa Govertsen (Billerica, MA) beat Kallie Garrett (Bend, Ore.) and Hannah Damon (Mystic, Conn.), 9-7.

Kristin Dillon (Exeter, Maine) and Katie Madison (Longview, Wash) salvaged the only point of the day for Gordon College as they topped Patty Quartararo (Lexington, MA) and Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden), 8-5 in 3rd flight doubles.

The Vikings swept all six singles matches led by McEwen and Turenne at No.1 and No. 2 singles. McEwen beat Garrett in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, and Turenne turned away Hickey who retired after the first game.

Quartararo, Muniz, Govertsen and Jessica Spinale (Saugus,MA) all cruised to straight set victories for Salem State.

The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday, at Worcester State for their first conference match of the year, while the Fighting Scots host Eatern Nazarene on Wednesday.
