Scots Edged By Wentworth, 4-5, In Season Opener

In their season opener against Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology, the Fighting Scots battled the visiting Leopards but in the end came out on the losing end of a 5-4 finish.

Despite Kallie Garrett (Sr./Bend, Ore.) and Hannah Damon (Fr./Mystic, Conn.) capturing an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, the Scots ceded No. 3 doubles, 1-8, to Wentworth's Deborah Massaro (So./Stony Point, N.Y.) and Jillian Flynn (Jr./Billerica, Mass.). The Leopards' No. 1 team of Joanna Gustafson (Sr./Ashburnham, Mass.) and Sophie Boyce (Jr./South Portland, Maine) took a 5-6 win after the Scots were forced to retire due to injury.

Looking to regain some ground in singles play, Jessie Dupre (Jr./North Billerica, Mass.) claimed a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 and Alyssa McCarthy (So./Rehoboth, Mass.) took a two-set victory at No. 4 (6-4, 7-5). Gordon was able to notch another win at No. 5 singles when Kristin Dillon (So./Exeter, Maine) came back from a set down to post the win in three sets (2-6, 6-0, 6-1). In the end, however, the host Scots were unable to complete the comeback victory and consequently move to 0-1 overall on the season.

Gordon returns to action on September 8 as they host Bridgewater State at 4:00 p.m., while Wentworth returns to play on the same day at Emmanuel at 4:00 p.m.
