Box Score
The Fighting Scots improved to 2-1 overall on the season today with a commanding 3-0 win over the visiting Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in non-conference women's soccer action.
With the Scots coming out of the gates to test WPI keeper Maddie Willer (So./Penfield, N.Y.) with a flurry of chances in the early going, it was Gordon's Caitlin Nedde (Jr./Colchester, Vt.) who marked the first tally of the day (and her first of the season) after burying a pass from Karina Scavo (Jr./Mount Sinai, N.Y.) on a corner kick in the 13th minute. Controlling much of the midfield possession and continuing their offensive, the Scots got on the boards again in the 38th minute when Hannah Midwinter (Fr./Barkhamsted, Conn.) headed home an assisted corner ball from Hala Coker (Sr./East Falmouth, Mass.) and Jane Dietrich (So./West Hartford, Conn.) to give Gordon the 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Adding an insurance goal roughly five minutes into the second stanza was Rachael Bailey (Sr./Barre, Vt.), who collected a slotted pass from Scavo inside the area and buried it into the back of the net, giving her her third tally of the season and Scavo's second assist of the day. Despite a late rally by the Engineers who tested Gordon keeper Kari Christensen (So./Standish, Maine) in the waning minutes, Christensen and the Gordon defense kept their attack at bay to preserve the shutout.
Christensen finished the day with five saves, while Willer turned away 15 for WPI in the effort.
The Scots return to action on Saturday, September 10 as they travel to Nichols for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup of the season at 2:30 p.m. WPI is also back at it on Saturday as they host Fitchburg State at 4:30 p.m.
