Men Finish Third, Women Fourth At CCC Championship


Men's Results
The Fighting Scots men finished third of six teams with a 2:24.38 total time on the 8k course in today's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Cross Country Championship hosted by Western New England University.

Roger Williams captured the team championship for the 12th consecutive year. Hawks junior Jack Ferguson bested the entire field to earn runner of the year honors with an 8K time of 26:52.

All-CCC recognition was given to the top-10 finishers, while Runner of the Year honors is awarded to the top finisher, and Rookie of the Year to the top "freshman" runner.

University of New England sophomore Chad Lyons finished just three ticks behind Ferguson with a time of 26:55, while Roger Williams freshman Doug Sasso finished third with a time of 26:57. Sasso also earned the rookie of the year award.

Roger Williams senior Steve Carnevale finished fourth with a time of 27:09, while Salve Regina freshman Sean Hughes finished one tick behind with a time of 27:10 for fifth place, and Roger Williams sophomore Jack Dunleavy took sixth with a 27:20 finish.

Rounding out the top-10 CCC Championship Runners for All-CCC recognition were University of New England sophomore Shane Murphy (27:23), Roger Williams freshman Chris Busby (27:28), Roger Williams sophomore Kevin Terbush (27:59), and University of New England freshman Cameron Vallie (28:12).

For the Scots, Andrew Swanson (Fr./Lexington, Mass.) was the team's top finisher on the day, coming in 12th of 71 runners with a 28:20.22 finish, followed closely by Wes Nelson (Fr./Charlton, Mass.) in 13th at 28:30.56. Andrew Kwiatkowski (Jr./Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Kory Powers (Fr./Waterford, Vt.) also had strong showings for Gordon, finishing 16th (28:54.22) and 17th (28:56.25), respectively. 

Gordon earned the conference's team sportsmanship award while the coach of the year honor went to Roger Williams head coach Sean Livingston.

The senior scholar-athlete award went to Mike O'Brien from Eastern Nazarene. O'Brien is a physics/electrical engineering major who holds a 3.96 grade point average.


Women's Results
The Scots raced to a fourth place finish out of eight total teams on Western New England's 6k Championship course today to close out their 2012 conference docket.

Roger Williams sophomore Hannah Zydanowicz bested the entire field to earn runner of the year honors with a time of 22:36. Zydanowicz also earned the rookie of the year award, as this is her first year of racing as a college student-athlete.

All-CCC recognition was given to the top-10 finishers, while Runner of the Year honors is awarded to the top finisher, and Rookie of the Year to the top "freshman" runner.

Salve Regina freshman Aubrey Palmquist finished behind Zydanowicz with a time of 23:19 to place second, while Hawk junior teammate Ema Waldschmidt finished just one tick behind at 23:20.

University of New England freshman Michaela Moran finished fourth (23:37), while two of her teammates, junior Colleen Ahern and sophomore Annelise Donahue took fifth and sixth with times of 23:46 and 23:51, respectively.

Rounding out the top-10 CCC Championship Runners for All-CCC recognition were Eastern Nazarene senior Ami Curtis (23:52), University of New England sophomore Natalie Hardman (23:53), Salve Regina freshman Joelle Ross (23:59), and Gordon freshman Leanna Beedle (Fr./Bethany, Conn.) (24:08).

In addition to Beedle, Mary Beth Gray (Jr./Gaffney, S.C.) had a standout day for the Scots with a 14th place finish (24:31.09) in the 108-runner field, while teammates Thais Ziegenhals (Jr./Essex, Mass.) took 21st at 24:57.22 and Katie Hakanson-Stacy (Sr./East Longmeadow, Mass.) finished 26th at 25:05.81.

Salve Regina and University of New England earned the conference's team sportsmanship award while the coach of the year honor went to UNE head coach Ron Ouellette.

The senior scholar-athlete award went to Hakanson-Stacy from Gordon, a secondary education major who holds a 4.0 grade point average.
