Sophomore forward
Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) netted a hat trick to help lead the Fighting Scots to a 7-0 win over non-conference Plymouth State University in women's soccer action today on Gordon's Quad, improving the Scots to an impressive 11-2 overall on the season.
Jamie Breton (Fr./Concord, N.H.),
Krysti Leach (Sr./Naples, Maine),
Caitlin Nedde (Sr./Colchester, Vt.), and
Claire Brooks (So./Unionville, Conn.) rounded out the Scots' scoring with one goal apiece, while
Kari Christensen (Jr./Standish, Maine) earned the win with one save in 45 minutes of work.
The Scots got on the board early when Nedde slotted a ball down the center of the area to McSherry, who tucked the ball under under Plymouth keeper Chelsea Duval (Sr./Dover, N.H.) for the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. That lead was extended 10 minutes later when Breton dribbled to the top corner of the box and ripped a shot from 20 yards into the far upper 90 for the 2-0 lead.
McSherry then booked back-to-back goals in the 31st and 33rd minutes, the first on an assist from
Karina Scavo (Sr./Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and the second from Leach to build the Scots a substantial four-goal lead heading into the half.
Carrying that offensive momentum into the second, Leach finished a
Kendra Woudenberg (Jr./Whitinsville, Mass.) pass on a scrum in front of the Panthers' net just one minute into the frame to make it a 5-0 Gordon lead.
Nedde and Brooks went on to put the final stamps on the win in the 59th and 64th minutes, respectively, as Nedde buried a slot pass from midfielder
Hannah Midwinter (So./Barkhamsted, Conn.) and Brooks converted a solo effort on a breakaway for her first collegiate goal to ice the victory for the host Scots.
Sharing the win in net for Gordon were keepers
McKenzie Dion (Fr./North Grafton, Mass.) and
Katie Mader (Fr./Scarborough, Maine), who split the second half and combined for four saves to preserve the shutout.
Duval recorded 13 saves on the day for the Panthers, who drop to 2-10 overall on the year.
The Scots return to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 13 as they host perennial foe Roger Williams University at 12 p.m. Plymouth looks to halt a four-game skid as they host Western Connecticut on the same day at 11 a.m.
