Scots Advance To CCC Finals With 3-2 Win Over ENC

Box Score
The Fighting Scots advanced to their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title game since 2005 today with a 3-2 semifinal win over the visiting Lions of Eastern Nazarene College on Gordon's Quad.

Pacing the winning effort offensively for Gordon with two goals and one assist was Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.), the CCC and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore forward Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded a goal and an assist and junior midfielder Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Jane Dietrich (Jr./West Hartford, Conn.) dished an assist apiece.

The Scots took an early lead in the first when McSherry fed Dietrich to the corner and Dietrich crossed to a waiting Nedde at the far post, who nodded the ball home past ENC keeper Kristen Farley (Fr./Westminster, Mass.) for the 1-0 advantage. After controlling the majority of the possession throughout the remainder of the half, the Scots went into the break maintaining their one-goal lead.

Coming out of the 15-minute halftime with gusto, the Lions' Jules Speno (So./Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) , an All-CCC First Team selection, headed in the equalizer from Justine Buchanan (Fr./Ballston Lake, N.Y.) in the 61st minute and Maleesa Santos (So./Colonie, N.Y.) netted her first of the season on a solo effort just under five minutes later to give ENC the 2-1 lead.

Determined not to concede defeat on their home field, however, Nedde took on the ENC defense to the left corner and crossed into the middle of the 18, where McSherry drilled in her 10th goal of the season off a mishandled ball by Farley to bring the game back to a deadlock, 2-2.

With both teams applying significant offensive pressure in pursuit of the game-winner, it was the Scots who notched the final tally of the match in the 82nd minute as Woudenberg attacked the left endline and sent a high cross to Nedde's head at the far post to put Gordon ahead, 3-2, and propel them to the CCC championship game.

The final goal marks Nedde's 10th game-winner of the season.

Gordon received a solid defensive effort from starting center backs Julia Miller (Jr./New York, N.Y.) and Krysti Leach (Sr./Naples, Maine) and outside backs Rachel Ashley (Sr./Lowville, N.Y.), Shelby Palafox (Fr./Lexington, Mass.), and Jamie Breton (Fr./Concord, N.H.), while keeper Kari Christensen (Jr./Standish, Maine) recorded five saves in the win.

Farley rounded out the afternoon with three saves in 90 minutes of work for ENC.

The Scots improve to 17-2 overall on the season and will face Roger Williams in the final on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. The Lions close out their 2012 campaign at 9-8-3 overall.
