Scots Take Down Pilgrims In Overtime Non-Conference Win, 64-56

Box Score
On day two of Gordon's tip-off tournament weekend, the Fighting Scots picked up an overtime win over the Pilgrims of New England College in the championship game, 64-56, to stay perfect and move to 2-0 overall on the season. The loss drops the Pilgrims to an even 1-1.

The Scots opened the scoring with a jumper in the paint from junior Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) in their first trip down the floor, but the Pilgrims answered a few plays later with fast break points from Markey Flewelling (Fr./Portsmouth, N.H.). The rest of the half proved to be much of the same as both teams traded the lead six times until NEC pulled slightly ahead by five with just under two minutes to go in the half. Determined to keep the game close, the Scots worked their way into just a two-point deficit at the break (26-24).

The second stanza proved to have a similar storyline as the first with neither team leading by more than four points at any point during the half. NEC’s Taylor Burgess (So./Randallstown, Md.) scored 15 of her 23 points in the second, while Gordon’s Clancey Adams (Jr/Simsbury, Conn.) scored all seven of her points and grabbed four of eight total rebounds to help the Scots contend for the lead. Down the stretch, conversion from the charity stripe from Burgess kept the Pilgrims close, but the Scots’ defense and a pair of missed NEC free throws deadlocked the score at 54-54 at the close of regulation.

While during regulation each team battled for the lead, overtime belonged almost entirely to the Scots, who outscored their guests 10-2 behind clutch threes from  Abby Biggar (So./Beverly, Mass.) and Skylar Bareford (Jr./Stonington, Conn.) and four consecutive free throws from Kranyak.

Kranyak finished the night with an impressive 23 points, 15 boards, four assists, and three steals, while Brooke Kratche (So./Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Biggar and Bareford chipped in nine points apiece in the win.

The Pilgrims' effort was paced by Burgess with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Kate Levy (Sr./Falmouth, Mass.) tallied 15 points in the loss.

The Scots take to the court again on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as they play host to non-conference Salem State at 5:30p.m., while NEC travels to Newbury College on Monday for a 5:30p.m. start.
