GORDON vs. GETTYSBURG- March 12, 2012

Taking on perennial powerhouse Gettysburg College on day one of the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Fighting Scots were outmatched by the Bullets, 7-1, to move to 0-1 overall on the season.

After a scoreless first two innings pitched by Skylar Bareford (So./Stonington, Conn.), Gettysburg plated a run in the third and tacked on four more in the fourth while pitcher Taylor Snyder (Jr./Little Silver, N.J.) maintained the Bullets' lead with a no-hitter through the top of the sixth inning to keep the Scots bats quiet. After Bareford went on to pitch a scoreless fifth and sixth, Gettysburg's lead was extended to 7-0 in the top of the seventh, and though Gordon's Rachel Otto (Sr./Plymouth, N.H.) produced a single RBI  in the bottom of the seventh, the Scots could not muster enough at the plate to complete a comeback effort.

GORDON vs. NORWICH- March 12, 2012

Hoping to rebound for a victory in game two of the day, the Scots were met with a formidable foe in the Norwich Cadets, who bested Gordon 10-1 in five innings to drop the Scots to 0-2 overall on the young season. Norwich got the scoring going early with a pair of runs in the top of the first, followed by a single run in the top of the second and a pair of runs in the third and fourth to make it a 7-0 ballgame. Though the Scots' Kerry McPartlan (Sr./Yonkers, N.Y.) would break their scoring silence with a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth, that proved to be as close as they would get as Norwich would collect three more in the top of the fifth to claim the nine-run win.

The Scots return to action tomorrow as they take on Norwich again at 9:30a.m. and Montreat at 11:30a.m.

GORDON  vs. NORWICH- March 13, 2012

Looking to claim a win in a rematch with Norwich today, the Fighting Scots took the game all the way to nine innings but in the end could not close out the win, as the Cadets edged out a 7-6 victory to keep Gordon winless on the year.

The Scots looked to be in good shape early on as Claire Bennett (Sr./Mumford, N.Y.) ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the second and Kendall Bukuras (So./North Falmouth, Mass.) tripled to bring home Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, N.J.) while Emily Borden (Sr./Groton, Conn.) also RBI sac flied to center in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-0 game. That lead was extended to 5-0 in the fifth as both Rachel Otto (Sr./Plymouth, N.H.) and Pepper singled and scored in the inning. Bennett and Skylar Bareford (So./Stonington, Conn.) combined for five scoreless innings at the mound until Norwich plated two in the sixth and rallied for three more in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Then, after both teams recorded single runs in the eighth, it was the Cadets who got the definitive run in the top of the ninth to hand Gordon the one-run loss.

GORDON vs. MONTREAT- March 13, 2012

Carrying their offensive momentum into game two of the day against Montreat, Bukuras got the scoring going for the Scots in the first, driving in Pepper with an RBI single to make it 1-0. Rachel Ryder (Fr./Telford, Pa.) furthered that lead to 2-0 on an RBI single to plate Otto in the second. Montreat then answered back, however, recording one run in the bottom of the second and going on to post one in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth, all of which went unanswered at the plate by Gordon.

Pepper went 5-for-8 on the day and threw out two at home from the outfield, while Ryder went 3-for-6 with an RBI and Bukuras also went 3-for-6 with one run scored.

Gordon will take on Mt. Saint Vincent tomorrow at 9:30a.m. followed by Albertus Magnus at 11:30a.m.

GORDON vs. MT. SAINT VINCENT- March 14, 2012

The Fighting Scots picked up their first win of the 2012 season today, blanking non-conference Mt. Saint Vincent, 7-0, at the Snowbird Invitational to move to 1-5 overall.

Gordon got on the scoreboard early when Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, N.J.) singled and was later driven in by Emily Borden (Sr./Groton, Conn.) on an RBI single for the 1-0 lead in the first. From there the Scots went on a scoring binge, plating three in the third, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth to create a 7-0 advantage and eventual win. The Dolphins were held scoreless thanks in large part to the standout efforts of Claire Bennett (Sr./Mumford, N.Y.) on the mound, who threw to the shutout victory with nine strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Pepper finished the outing with two runs on 2-for-4 hitting, while Borden went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run, and two RBI.

GORDON vs. ALBERTUS MAGNUS- March 14, 2012

Despite the offensive success in game one versus Mt. Saint Vincent, however, the Scots were unable to overpower the bats of Albertus Magnus in game two, falling 8-3 to the Falcons to settle for a split on the day.

Gordon got the scoring going in the top of the first frame as Rachel Ryder (Fr./Telford, Pa.) singled and was later driven home off a Kendall Bukuras (So./North Falmouth, Mass.) triple. Later that inning, Borden ripped the first homerun of the year to give the Scots the 2-0 lead. After Albertus Magnus picked up a run in the second the Scots answered back in the third with another run of their own, but from there the game belonged to the Falcons, who went on to overtake the lead in the bottom of the fourth en route to the eventual five-run victory.

The Scots will face Alfred tomorrow at 9:30a.m. followed by Danville Community College at 11:30a.m.

GORDON vs. ALFRED- March 15, 2012

Taking on Alfred State University today in Snowbird Invitational action, the Fighting Scots notched their second win of the season with a resounding 9-1 victory to move to 2-5 overall on the year.

Wasting no time at the plate, the Scots tacked four on the board in the bottom of the first to start the game with gusto and went on to record another three in the third and one apiece in the fifth and sixth. Claire Bennett (Sr./Mumford, N.Y.) secured the victory for Gordon from the outset at the mound, giving up only two hits and one run in five innings pitched, while also contributing on the offensive end going 3-for-3 with two singles, an RBI double, and a run. Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, N.J.) continued her success at the plate for the Scots, reaching base three out of four times with two hits and a run.

Though today was scheduled to be the final day of competition at the Snowbird, the Scots picked up another game tomorrow at 9:00a.m. against Norwich.

GORDON vs. NORWICH- March 16, 2012

Looking to avenge a pair of early week losses to the Cadets, the Fighting Scots could not in the end overcome Norwich in their final game of the Snowbird Invitational, falling 8-3 to move to 2-6 overall.

Norwich left the Scots trailing early after leading off the game with two singles and a home run to take a 3-0 lead, following that up with another trio of runs in the second and a single run in the third. Despite the deficit, Gordon rallied in the bottom of the third when Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, N.J.) tripled and later scored on a Rachel Ryder (Fr./Telford, Pa.) RBI single and Ryder came home on a Claire Bennett (Sr./Mumford, N.Y.) RBI single to make it an 8-2 game.

In the top of the next frame, Norwich plated their eighth and final run of the game, and although the Scots posted one more run in the fourth when Ryder RBI doubled to drive in Rachel Otto (Sr./Plymouth, N.H.), they would come no closer to overtaking the lead as Norwich went on to the claim the five-run win.

Overall on the week, Pepper went 14-28 (.500), scoring eight runs, stealing three bases, and driving in a single run while batting safely in each of the Scots' games. Emily Borden (Sr./Groton, Conn.) also had a standout week, batting .550 (11-20) with three runs and seven RBI, while Bennett hit .538 (7-13) and struck out 19 from the mound in a 2-1 week.

The Scots return home to the North Shore to host Wentworth in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) double-header on March 23 at 3:00p.m.
