The Fighting Scots dropped to 4-8 overall on the season today after being swept on their home diamond by the Beavers of UMaine Farmington in a non-conference twinbill. The games marked the first of the season for the Beavers, improving them to 2-0 overall.
Farmington wasted no time getting the bats going in game one, leading off with six runs in the top of the first behind an RBI single from Meghan Donnell (Sr./Rochester, N.H.), another RBI single from Casey Mull (Fr./Portland, Maine), a two-RBI triple from Devin Fitzgerald (So./Casco, Maine), and an Michelle Cote (Fr./Arrundel, Maine) RBI single. That lead was extended to 9-0 in the third after Amy Jones (So./Augusta, Maine) sac flied to center for an RBI and a pair of runs walked in later in the inning to leave the Scots to battle a heavy deficit. In the end, the Beavers proved too strong on both ends, holding the Scots scoreless at the plate while recording one run in the fourth and another three in the fifth to close out the game in five innings.
Game two followed a similar pattern, with Farmington scoring 14 runs over the course of the first three innings (five in the first, four in the second, five in the third) to establish a commanding early lead. And although the Scots were able to get one back in the middle of that run when
Kerry McPartlan (Sr./Yonkers, N.Y.) crossed home on an error in the bottom of the second, the Beavers secured the game with solid pitching from Kaitlyn Barrett (Jr./Chesterville, Maine), who allowed just three hits and one run with four strikeouts en route to the win.
Bartlett paced Farmington's overall effort on the day, batting .600 (3-5) with a double and a homerun for five RBI over both games, while Mull batted .667 (2-3) with three runs and an RBI in a single game's work. Earning the win in game one was Emma Vaillancourt (So./Saco, Maine), who allowed just two hits and struck out nine in the 13-0 shutout.
The Scots have a quick turnaround as they travel to face the University of New England tomorrow in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader beginning at 3:30p.m. The Beavers also get right back into action, traveling to downtown Boston to face Eastern Nazarene at 3:00p.m.
