UMass Boston Handles Gordon in Non-CCC Sweep

Box Score (game one)
Box Score (game two)

The Fighting Scots were outmatched by the visiting Beacons of UMass Boston today in non-conference softball action, falling in five innings in both games to move to 4-17 overall on the season. With the pair of wins UMass improves to 13-9 overall.

The Beacons set the tone for what proved to be a dominant day in the early going of game one as Amanda Perry (Fr./Worcester, Mass.) walked for an RBI, Samantha Hemstock (Fr./Northford, Conn.) singled for two RBIs, Erika Vecchiet (So./Pequannock, N.J.) RBI singled, and Hemstock later came home to take a 5-0 lead. The Scots responded with a pair of their own in the bottom of the same frame when Emily Borden (Sr./Groton, Conn.) ripped a two-RBI single to score Rachel Ryder (Fr./Telford, Pa.) and Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, N.J.) and keep the game within reach.

Carrying their momentum at the plate from the first into the second, the Beacons recorded another four runs in the top of the inning as Perry doubled to bring in two, Hemstock reached on an error for an RBI, and Natalia Bouyea (So./East Longmeadow, Mass.) doubled for an RBI to blow the lead up to 9-2. Gordon's Pepper earned two of those runs back in the bottom half, stepping up to crush a two-run homer and keep the Scots' offense active.

Unfortunately for Gordon, however, the Beacons remained active on the offensive as well, posting a seven-run effort in the third to expand their advantage to a hefty 16-4. And though the Scots were able to bring in three more of their own in the bottom of the third on a Kendall Bukuras (So./North Falmouth, Mass.) RBI double, Skylar Bareford (So./Stonington, Conn.) RBI single, and an error at the plate by UMass, those proved to be the last runs of the game for Gordon as UMass went on to score two more in the fourth to secure the win.

From there the day belonged entirely to the Beacons, who overwhelmed the Scots in game two with 21 unanswered runs to capture a resounding win and put an authoritative stamp on the twinbill sweep.

The Scots look to rebound tomorrow as they host the Vikings of Salem State in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30p.m.
