QUINCY, Mass. - Eastern Nazarene College and Gordon College faced off on Monday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader. The Lions and the Fighting Scots split the twinbill at Mitchell-McCoy field. ENC took game one, 6-2, improving to 6-16 on the season and 2-6 in CCC play. After posting a 6-5 win in game two to break a seven-game skid, Gordon finds itself at 4-13 overall and 3-5 in conference.
In game one, freshman Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) took the mound for ENC, squaring off against GC senior
Claire Bennett (Mumford, N.Y.).
Gordon senior
Emily Borden (Groton, Conn.) put her squad on the board with a single in the first, driving in freshman
Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.) to give the Scots the early lead.
In the bottom of the first, sophomore Sam Losano got things started for ENC with a lead off triple down the right field line, but was left stranded on third as the inning came to a close.
At the plate first in the bottom of second, Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.) doubled down left field line. Senior Jamie Block stepped up next and knocked an RBI base hit up the middle to tie the contest at 1-1.
In the fourth, Gordon rallied off of another single from Borden and a double from senior
Kerry McPartlan (Yonkers, N.Y.) to score a run and go up 2-1.
A wild pitch and a couple of Fighting Scots’ errors worked to ENC’s advantage in its half of the inning, as sophomore Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) hit a 2-out, 2-RBI double to give Eastern Nazarene the 4-2 edge.
Sorensen and sophomore Taylor Fleming (Upland, Ind.) hit back-to-back singles in the fifth, and were moved over on an excellent sacrifice bunt from freshman Carissa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.). A. Moore came to the plate next and singled through left side to score Sorensen and give ENC the 5-2 advantage.
Gordon hit a couple of base knocks in the sixth, but Sorensen and the Lions got out of the inning before any damage was done.
Ace Carradine (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored the final run for the Lions in the sixth. Carradine was a hit by a pitch, and advanced on a passed ball and a Clinkscale groundout. Losano knocked Carradine in, on a groundout to short to collect the games’ last RBI.
Borden led the Fighting Scots, going 3-3 in the game with three singles and an RBI. McPartlan tallied Gordon’s other RBI, going 1-3 on the day for the Fighting Scots.
Seven Lions collected hits in the contest, with Losano and A. Moore leading the effort, garnering two apiece. Sorensen, Fleming, Cicolini, Block and Clinkscale snagged the remaining hits for ENC.
Sorensen got the win for Eastern Nazarene, improving to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in CCC play. Bennett took the loss, dropping to 2-3 on the year.
In game two, senior Hannah Moore (Sheridan Calif.) started on the mound for ENC. Borden continued her dominance, singling in the first to tally Gordon’s first hit of game two, but Moore and the Lions prevailed, getting the next out of the inning to strand Borden on first.
Sophomore
Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) got the start for Gordon in game two and was able to get the Fighting Scots out of the first inning with ENC runners on second and third.
Gordon scored two runs on three hits and a Lions’ error in the third inning to go up 2-0. Senior
Rachel Otto (Plymouth, N.H.) hit the first base knock, followed by a fielder’s choice which saw freshman
Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) reach and advance to second on an error by the Lions’ infield. Otto would be thrown out on the play, but senior
Liz Cheesman (Winslow, Maine) would not be discouraged, singling to left field and scoring Pepper. Borden stepped to the plate and hit her fourth single of the afternoon, moving Cheesman to third. A passed ball saw Cheesman score next, but the inning would end shortly after, as McPartlan grounded out to H. Moore on the mound.
Losano got the ball rolling for the Lions in the third with a single through the right side. She came up with her first of two stolen bases in the inning during Sorensen’s at bat, and after Sorensen walked, both runners successfully pulled off the double steal to set up the sacrifice fly for Fleming, who completed her mission and scored Losano.
Still chipping away at the Fighting Scots’ 2-1 lead, the Lions scored another run in the fourth to tie the ballgame at 2-2.
Gordon would respond, two innings later, with two big hits from Cheesman and Borden to lead off the the sixth. After Borden claimed her sixth hit of the day, Lions head coach Leah Hampton called for a pitching change, and brought in senior Jamie Block (Pembroke, Mass.). Sophomore
Kendall Bukuras (North Falmouth, Mass.) picked up a single to score Cheesman, and a few batters later Otto collected two more RBI’s for Gordon, giving her squad the 5-2 lead.
Eastern Nazarene was not through fighting, however, and put together a big sixth inning of its own. Carradine walked first and Clinkscale singled through the middle to move her over on the ensuing at bat. Losano, who had a big day for ENC, singled next to load the bases for Sorensen. With the pressure on and one out on the board, Sorensen hit an RBI single through the right side to score Carradine. Clinkscale would be tagged out on the plate for the second out of the inning. Despite the pressure, Fleming was composed at the plate and walked to give the Lions another baserunner. With the bases loaded, Cicolini ripped a double to right center, scoring Sorensen and Losano to tie the game at 5-all going into the seventh.
Block got two quick outs in the seventh, which brought Cheesman to the plate. With the count at 2-1, Cheesman wailed on the ball, homering to left center and scoring what would be the winning run for her Gordon team.
Cheesman went 4-4 in game two with two RBI’s and three runs scored. Borden completed her perfect day, going 3-3, once again for the Fighting Scots. Bukuras and Otto had success, tallying two hits apiece and combining for the remaining three RBI’s.
Losano went 2-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored for ENC. Clinkscale put together a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with an RBI, while Cicolini collected two Lions’ RBI’s off of her double. Sorensen, freshman Olivia Tovar (Coarsegold, Calif.), and Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.) grabbed the remaining hits, while Taylor Fleming used a keen eye to walk three times.
Bareford (2-6) got the win for Gordon, pitching a complete game, striking out seven and walking nine. Block (0-3) took the Loss for Eastern Naz, giving up three hits, one walk, and two runs in two innings on the mound.
Gordon returns to action on Wednesday, when the Scots will take on crosstown rival, Endicott in a 3:15pm CCC DH. ENC travels to Univ. of New England the same day for a 3:00pm twinbill.
