Box Score
Playing to their home crowd under the lights at the Brigham Athletic Complex tonight, the Fighting Scots captured a commanding 2-0 season-opening win over the visiting Huskies of the University of Southern Maine to move to 1-0 on the season.
Helping to make the first notch in the 2012 win column were senior captains
Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.) and
Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) who netted a goal apiece, while keeper
Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) preserved the shutout with two saves.
The Scots came out firing on the offensive and got on the board early when Scavo fed Nedde who sliced through the Huskies' defense and bested USM netminder Marissa Temple (Fr./Grafton, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead at the 11:08 mark. Despite several other viable scoring opportunities throughout the half and a total of 13 shots, the Scots maintained just the one-goal advantage at the break.
Looking to extend that lead in the second, the Scots peppered USM's cage throughout the half, finally finding the back of the net in the 84th minute when Scavo blasted home a feed from
Jane Dietrich (Jr./West Hartford, Conn.) off a corner for the eventual 2-0 win.
Temple rounded out the night with 12 saves in the losing effort.
The Scots take to the road for game two of the season to face Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 4:00p.m., while USM returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 2 at Thomas.
