On the road for the Elms College Invitational today in Chicopee, Mass., Gordon women's cross country placed second of 13 teams while the men placed third of nine on the trails of Chicopee State Memorial Park in their third meet of the young season.
Leanne Beedle (Fr./Bethany, Conn.) was the top finisher for the Fighting Scots for the second consecutive week, completing the 5k course in 20:59, good enough for seventh place out of 115 runners. Teammates
Katie Hakanson-Stacy (Sr./East Longmeadow, Mass.),
Samantha Goedeke (Sr./Villa Park, Ill.), and
Mariah Geiger (Fr./Londonderry, N.H.) followed closely behind in the 10th (20:59), 11th (21:39), and 12th (21:45) spots, respectively, while
Mary Beth Gray (Jr./Gaffney, S.C.) finished in 15th at 21:59.
Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent University of New England took the top finish in the women's race with 28 points with the Scots in second with 55 and Sage in third with 100.
On the men's side, Gordon's Athlete of the Week
Andrew Swanson (Fr./Lexington, Mass.) once again finished first of all Scots and ninth overall in the 98-runner field with a 29:10 time on the 8k course with teammate
Wes Nelson (Fr./Charlton, Mass.) coming in three spots behind with a 29:25.
Andrew Kwiatkowski (Jr./Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and
Kory Powers (Fr./Waterford, Vt.) also posted strong showings for the Scots, finishing 18th and 19th with 29:59 and 30:16 finishes.
Babson earned the top team finish on the day with 23 points, while UNE finished second with 52 and Gordon finished third with 89.
The Scots return to their home trails next weekend to host the annual Pop Crowell Invitational beginning at 10:45a.m.
