Scots Sail Over Pilgrims With 3-0 Non-Conference Shutout

Box Score
The Fighting Scots improved to 8-1 overall on the season tonight with a 3-0 shutout over the visiting Pilgrims of New England College at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex.

Senior forward Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.) paced the win for the Scots with a pair of goals, while sophomore forward Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) is credited with the game-winner.

The Scots applied heavy offensive pressure on their guests from the outset, creating several viable scoring opportunities in the opening minutes to challenge NEC keeper Trisha Sardagnola (So./Shrewsbury, Mass.). That pressure paid off in the 14th minute when midfielder Kendra Woudenberg (Jr./Whitinsville, Mass.) carried the ball down the left side and beat her defender with a slotted cross straight to the waiting foot of McSherry, who finished from close range to give Gordon the 1-0 lead.

Just under five minutes later, Nedde sliced through three NEC defenders and bested Sardagnola to the left post on a solo effort to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Though, the Scots would outshoot the Pilgrims 17-4 in the half, the score remained at 2-0 heading into the break.

Then, nearly eight minutes into the second stanza, Nedde added her second tally of the night (eighth of the season) after heading home a corner from midfielder Karina Scavo (Sr./Mount Sinai, N.Y.) to secure the three-goal win for the Scots.

Gordon netminder Kari Christensen (Jr./Standish, Maine) is credited with the win having made three stops on the night and shares the shutout with rookie Katie Mader (Fr./Scarborough, Maine) who turned one away.

Sardagnola finished the night with an impressive 12 saves in net for the Pilgrims, who drop to 3-6-1 overall on the season.

The Scots return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 29 as they host conference opponent Nichols College at 1p.m. NEC will travel to Thomas on the same day for a 3p.m. start.
