In Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s tennis action today at the Bass River Tennis Club the Seahawks of Salve Regina University rolled to a 7-2 win over the Gordon College Fighting Scots. With the win the Seahawks improve to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the CCC, while the Scots drop to 3-7 and 2-4 respectively.
Senior Sarah Hickey (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had a winning day for the Scots at number one doubles and number two singles. She and Lily Drescher (Fr./Reading, Mass.) edged Ana Gwozdz (Jr./Taunton, Mass.) and Elizabeth Liguori (Jr./Westerly, R.I.) 9-7 in the doubles match. Hickey went on to beat Gwozdz in three sets in their singles match.
From there Salve owned the day, winning both remaining doubles matches 8-1 and the other five singles matches in straight sets. Elizabeth DiFilippo (So./West Chester, Pa.) and Shannon O’Brien (Sr./Gorham, Maine) had a particularly impressive day, both knocking off their singles opponents 0-6, 0-6 as well as posting 8-1 victories in their respective doubles matches.
Salve takes to the courts again on Thursday October 4, at 3:30p.m. while the Scots are back in play on Monday October 1, as they travel to Mt. Ida for a 3:00p.m. start.
