Scots Compete At Southern Maine Invitational


MEET RESULTS

Competing in their first meet since before the Christmas holiday, the Fighting Scots were on the road in Gorham, Maine today to take on some of New England's best at the University of Southern Maine Invitational.

A native of Gorham, freshman Leanna D'Alfonso recorded the best finish of the day for the Scots, coming in 3rd of 17 in the 400m dash with a 1:02.94. Teammate Damilola Junaid registered 6th of 44 in the 55m dash preliminary heat with a 7.81 and followed up with a 7th-place, 7.82 in the final, and later went on to record 6th of 42 in the 200m dash at 27.77. Competing in the mile run, Gordon cross country standout Leanne Beedle (Fr./Bethany, Conn.) took 9th in the 30-runner field with a 5:31.41, followed  in the 12th slot by Mary-Beth Gray (Jr./Gaffney, S.C.) at 5:44.78.

In field events, Kagan Magnoli (Sr./Weston, Conn.) was the top hurler for Gordon, placing 13th in the weight throw at 7.89m.

On the men's side, David Popa (So./Jackson Heights, N.Y.) had a strong day on the track with a 9th place finish in the 200m (24.60) and 16th in the 55m (7.13). Also earning 9th place finishes were Wes Nelson (Fr./Charlton, Mass.) in the 3000m with a season-best 9:32.89 and David Chamberlain (Fr./San Jose, Costa Rica) in the weight throw with a 10.23m effort. Joining Popa in the 55m was Kola Olateju (So./Arden Hills, Minn.), who followed closely behind his teammate in 20th at 7.26, while Andrew Kwiatkowski (Jr./Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) took 10th in the 800m at 2:11.15.

The Scots return to action on Saturday, February 2 at Tufts University.
