Women's Tennis Upsets Colonels; Advances to CCC Semifinals

Match Results
MILTON, Mass. –
The Fighting Scot's freshman Cindi Flynn (Sunset Beach, Calif.) clinched the decisive fifth point as the No. 5 seed Gordon College women's tennis team upset fourth-seeded Curry College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals with a 5-2 score on Tuesday afternoon at the Big Nine Courts.

Three years since their last playoff appearance, the Scots rallied valiantly after getting down early. The match had the opposite results from when the two teams met earlier in the season, when Gordon led 2-1 after doubles play. The Colonels responded with four wins in singles to gut out a 5-4 regular season victory at the Brigham Tennis Courts.

Getting down early on Tuesday set the Scots up for a perfect opportunity to enact revenge.

In the opening doubles session, the Colonels earned their only two points of the match at the #1 and #2 positions.  At #1, seniors Emily Mongello (Plymouth, Mass.) and Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) defeated freshmen Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.) and Flynn, 9-7.  In the #2 slot, sophomore Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and senior Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, Mass.) knocked off sophomore Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and sophomore Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.), 8-3.  In the final doubles flight, the Scots freshman Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) and senior Jessie Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) proved to be too much for Curry seniors Devin Curley (Marshfield, Mass.) and Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.) as they posted an 8-4 victory.
Gordon needed to win four singles matches for the victory which they did at the first, third, fourth and sixth spots.  At first singles, Hall took care of Mulrooney, 6-0, 6-1.  The Scots won back-to-back flights when at Drescher earned a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over freshman Molly Louis (Guilford, Conn.) at three and Flynn got the best of Chuha, 6-3, 7-5, at fourth singles.  Needing just one more singles victory, Caron posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over freshman Kayla Prete (Orange, Conn.).

The playoffs won't get an easier for the Scots as they travel to Dudley on Thursday afternoon for a semifinal showdown with top-seeded Nichols. The Bison defeated Gordon three weeks ago 6-3 at Nichols, but the Scots are looking to right the ship this time around.

Gordon and Nichols will kick off their CCC Semifinal match at 2 p.m.
