WENHAM, Mass. – Drew University claimed the 2013 Gordon Tip-Off Tournament with a 62-39 win over host Gordon. The Rangers scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed in contest to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Rangers poised a serious threat to the Scots' chances for repeating as champions for the Tip-Off Tourney, one day after overcoming an 11-point deficit to New England College. Their mix of outside shooting and daunting post presence was on full display from the outset of the game.
Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J.) continued where she left off from Friday night, hitting on a pair of triples early, as the Rangers built up a nine-point lead halfway through the first period. She finished with 12 points in the first half.
Gordon junior Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) put the Scots on her back for a long stretch in the first half—going toe to toe with Drew's sharpshooter. Kratche made five of her seven shots in the first half, including a deep jumper to draw the game within four points.
The Scots entered the half down 31-18 and searching for some answers on the offensive end.
Miller extended the Rangers lead with a quick three to begin the second half, but Gordon went on a small 8-2 run spurred by made free throws by Fredi Nielsen (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
However the story of the day was the Rangers' ability to create second-chance opportunities. Drew had 19 offensive rebounds, which directly led to 19 extra points for the Rangers. The Scots had 10 offensive rebounds of their own, but Drew's size advantage in the low post was a difference maker in the end result.
Streaky play by Miller and Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md.) down the stretch gave the Rangers a 62-39 victory. Miller finished with 21 points, while Stephens chipped in 13 from her power forward position. Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn.) put up 13 points and five rebounds off of the bench.
The Scots were led by Kratche's impressive shooting performance, as she finished with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. However, the junior only attempted three shots in the second half—making two—as the Rangers focused their defensive efforts on limiting her looks.
Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) played well in extended duty off of the bench, finishing with eight points. Nielson had a strong second half as well, finished with seven points and three rebounds.
Following the game, Kratche, Miller and Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Gordon is back in action on Thursday night for their first away contest of the season at Fisher College in Boston. That game will tip off at 6 p.m. as the Scots looked to notch their second win of the year.
