Midwinter's Header Carries Scots in Overtime Thriller

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass. – The Gordon Women's Soccer team got a walk-off header from junior Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) less than two minutes into the first overtime to survive Eastern Nazarene at home. The Fighting Scots 2-1 victory in sudden death extends their season and sets up a semifinals matchup at Roger Williams on Wednesday evening.

Saturday's game was a tale of two halves for the Scots, who looked flat to start the game against the visiting Lions. Eastern Nazarene controlled the possession for much of the half and peppered Fighting Scots' goalkeeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) with shots from all over.

Dion and her defensive base held strong enough to keep the Lions high-scoring attack off the board in the first 45 minutes. The Lions outshot the Scots 9-1 in the first half and forced Dion to make four saves to preserve the temporary draw.

The Scots came out with more urgency in the second half and challenged the previously untested ENC defense with several perfect crosses. Gordon's forwards were off fractionally on all three early opportunities as the score remaining scoreless.

After fending off a few close calls on their defensive end, Gordon finally broke the tie in the 65th minute.

Kara Dry gathered a deflected ball in the middle of the field and found herself wide open 25 yards away from the net. Dry shot across her body and placed a shot on the right side of the net within reach of the keeper. Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) look to have initially made the save, but the ball squirted out of her grasp and into the net for the first score.

Gordon's celebration was short lived as the Lions countered with a score of their own only three minutes after Dry's goal. Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) received a flick pass from Abby Spitler and tucked the ball inside the left post for the equalizer.

Both teams went back and forth over the final 20 minutes, but neither could put the game-winning opportunity away.

The Scots started off with the ball in the first overtime and quickly put pressure on the Lions' defense. Forward Lauren Hayes (Wantage, N.J.) earned a corner kick less than two minutes into the frame, which would turn out to be the final play of the game.

Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) lofted the corner kick toward the middle of the six-yard box, where Midwinter met the ball with her forehead. Midwinter's strike screamed into the back of the goal as the Scots' bench poured out onto the field to celebrate the victory.
The Lions outshot the Scots 18-9 in the game, including an 8-4 on-goal advantage, but Dion picked up her 13th win of the year in net. Farley made two saves in the loss.

Gordon advances to the semifinals where they will meet Roger Williams, who took care of business in their quarterfinal matchup against Western New England, 2-0. The Scots suffered their first conference loss of the season in a windy environment at Roger Williams last weekend, but will look to avenge that loss to earn a CCC Championship bid.
