SALEM, Mass.—Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) scored a game high 19 points , but a balanced Salem State attack led the Vikings (3-3) over the Fighting Scots 70-59 at Twohig Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Salem State took the early lead as Ashley White knocked down a three from the top of the key to spearhead the Vikings on a 9-2 run to start the game. Kratche helped bring the Scots back, as her layup brought Gordon to within a point at 11-10. Then Ginny Fleming took over in the low post, scoring 11 of her 19 points in the first half, to help the Vikings build a 33-26 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Fighting Scots took advantage of poor shooting by the Vikings to creep to within a point at 37-36. A layup by Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, NY) put Gordon up by a point 40-39 with 13:51 remaining in the game for the first lead of the game.
However, a three-point play by Rachel Ledbetter sparked a 12-4 run by the Vikings that gave the home team a 10-point advantage with just over eight minutes to play.
Gordon (2-2) drew to within four points, 54-50 on a Fredi Nielsen (Bridgeport, CT) jumper, but an 11-2 spurt by Salem State shut the door on the Scots comeback bid. The Scots struggled from the free throw line down the stretch, going 3-for-14 (21.4%) from the line in the second half and 5-for-19 (26.3%) for the game.
Rachael Carter ended up with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Jess Kuzmickas added nine for the Vikings, who forced 23 turnovers by Gordon.
The Fighting Scots' Kratche continued her hot start to her junior campign with eight boards to add to her 19 points and Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, VA) added 13 points, but it was not enough as the game ended in a 70-59 Vikings' victory. Clancy Adams (Simsbury, Conn.) put forth one of the most complete games of the season by any Gordon player with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in an outstanding defensive performance.
Salem State will take on Tufts University next on December 3rd at 7:00pm. Gordon will host Endicott in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference match up of the season next Wednesday at the Bennett Center.
