DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds in Nichols College's 60-39 win over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Athletic Center.
Wegrzynek added two assists, two steals and one block as the Bison improved to 5-2 (1-1 CCC) on the season. Senior captain Kasey Pelletier (Dunstable, Mass.) added 17 points while classmate and captain Devon Spirka (Wilmington, Vt.) recorded eight points, six assists, three assists and two steals.
Nichols held the Fighting Scots (2-4, 0-2 CCC) to 24 percent shooting (11-of-45) - including 0-for-13 from three-point land – and turned 31 Gordon turnovers into 26 points. Junior Kylie-blu Crawford (West Dover, Vt.) dropped in a pair of three-pointers off the bench.
The Bison trailed by three 12 minutes into the first before they closed the half on 26-12 run to take a 30-19 lead into the half. A layup by Wegrzynek gave them an 8-7 lead with 10:38 left in the half, and they held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Wegrzynek finished the stanza with a game-high 10 points while Pelletier had nine. Junior Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) led Gordon with 17 points, which is right at her season average over the team's first six games.
A jumper by junior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) pushed the Bison lead to 20 at 40-20 with 13 minutes left in the second half, and a pair of free throws by Pelletier at 8:04 gave them their largest lead of the afternoon at 26 (50-24).
Gordon held a slim 43-41 edge on the glass, led by eight from Kratche. Sophomore Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Fredi Nielsen (Bridgeport, Conn.) each scored five points for the visitors. The game with the Bison marked the second time the Scots have outrebounded their opponents for an entire contest.
The Bison return to action on December 10 when they head to Lyndon State for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The Fighting Scots return home to host Lesley December 14 at 1 p.m, as their non-conference schedule begins to wind down.
