Scots Snap Losing Streak With 44-43 Victory Over Eastern Nazarene

Box Score
Hosting the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action today in Gordon’s Bennett Athletic Center, the Fighting Scots snapped their losing streak with a 44-43 victory over their guests to move to 1-13 in the CCC (3-18 overall). ENC drops to 5-9 in league, 10-11 overall.

The Scots took the first lead of the afternoon when freshman guard Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stole the ball off ENC senior guard Ace Carradine (Honolulu, Hawaii) on the opening possession and converted the layup at the other end to put them on the board. Gordon pulled ahead over the next six minutes behind six points each from junior guard Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) and junior forward Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) to build a 14-7 advantage.

Carradine then took matters into her own hands with six points to bring ENC back to even (18-18) at the 6:35 mark. The Lions took their first lead on their next possession and held it until the final seconds when Kranyak hit an unassisted jumper in the paint to give Gordon the 27-26 edge at the half.

At the start of the second, Gordon widened that lead behind a pair of buckets from Kranyak and sophomore forward Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) while holding ENC scoreless in the first four minutes to build the lead to five. Senior forward Shardae Brown (Waterbury, Conn.) finally broke the Lions’ silence with five points over the next three minutes to keep her team within reaching distance of the lead. Then a trio of quick fouls from Kratche landed her on the bench and opened the window further for ENC to pull the game to within three (38-35) at 9:04. After Kratche fouled out just a minute and a half later, ENC went on an 8-2 run to claim its first lead of the stanza, 43-42, with 3:04 on the clock.

That score remained until Kranyak pulled down a defensive rebound with 51 seconds to go and went the other way to convert the fast break layup and give Gordon what turned out to be the winning bucket.

Kranyak finished the outing with 19 points, nine rebounds, and three steals and Kratche recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds to pace Gordon’s win.
Brown rounded out the Lions’ effort with 13 points, seven rebounds and crossed the 1,000-career point threshold with a jumper in the paint at 2:34 in the first half. Junior forward Abbie Tonello (Bourne, Mass.) and Carradine also booked eight points, eight rebounds and eight points, four rebounds, respectively, in the effort.

The Scots look to pick up another win as they travel to Endicott for a CCC matchup at 5:30p.m. on February 6. ENC will host conference-leader University of New England on the same day at 5 p.m.
