Seventh Inning Sinks Gordon In Final Two Games Of Spring Training

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Penn College

The Fighting Scots Softball was bested by repeat opponents Penn College and Albertus Magnus in two seventh inning decisions this afternoon in their final day of spring training at the Snowbird Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

In Gordon’s first game of the year the Wildcats of Penn College outdid the Scots in an 13-2 routing that ended in five innings, but today seemed like a whole new team as they fell in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk off RBI-double from Shaeffer.

Shortstop Rachel Ryder (So./Telford, Pa.), who went a perfect 3-3,  lead off with a triple to deep right field, and then used a passed ball to put the Scots on the board early in the first inning. Despite the strong start Wildcat pitcher Lacy Lose (Jr./Avis, Pa.) responded by fanning the next three Gordon batters to notch three of 10 Ks on the day.

In the bottom of the second an error that scored Stephanie Koleno (So./Moshannon, Pa.) and an RBI-double from Casey Davis (So./New Albany, Pa.) followed by a single from Samantha Hill (Montgomery, Ala.) that would bring in Davis and gave the Wildcats the 3-1 lead heading into the third. The Scots would answer immediately, tying the game thanks to a single from sophomore center fielder Kara Pepper(Wyckoff, N.J.).

The Scots and the Wildcats would again trade runs, scoring two apiece in their next at bats, highlighted by a controversial two-run home run hit by Penn College’s Katie Kratzer (Fr./Selinsgrovs, Pa.) From there both teams would score six more runs to put the game at a deadlock going into the last inning, 11-11.

Though the Scots would put a runner in scoring position the top of the inning proved fruitless for Gordon. Penn stormed out of the gates in the bottom of the inning with a double to left field from Koleno.  A walk-off double from Shaeffer would be all that they would need to close out the win, 12-11.

The Wildcats head north to host Elmira College on Tuesday March 19 in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.

Albertus Magnus

For a second time today the Scots would falter in the seventh inning to concede the win to their opponents, this time to Albertus Magnus, 5-4, finishing spring training with a record of 2-6.

The Falcons started off scoring with two outs in the top of the first inning when Danielle Figueroa (Sr./Bridgeport, Conn.) brought in two walked batters with a double to center field. Despite both teams threatening, no one would cross the plate again until the bottom of third inning when a Falcon error allowed Skylar Bareford(Jr./Stonington, Conn.)  to reach and scored Pepper.

Albertus Magnus would continue to maintain a steady lead scoring one run in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Heading into the bottom of the sixth the Falcons held a 4-1 lead over Gordon with the Scots unable to string hits together leading up to this point. Freshman left fielder Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) began the inning with a rip to centerfield, putting her on second base, and a walk along with some heads up base running had two runners in scoring position when catcher Hope Zigterman (Fr./ stepped up to the plate. The freshman came through in a clutch moment with a two-RBI single to right center which was followed by a single to the shortstop from Shannon Dodds (Jr./Audubon, Pa.) that scored Zigteman. With four hits and three runs, the Scots brought the game to even at 4-4.

The Scots made quick work of the first two Albertus Magnus batters with a fly ball and a ground out. A single and a walk put Falcons Alyssa Puccilli (Fr./Milford, Conn.) and Krista LaBissoniere (Sr./Meriden, Conn.) on base. With two on and two out, Gordon’s Kelly Beardslee (Jr./Thomaston, Conn.) came out in relief for Bareford after six and two thirds innings of work allowing eight hits and five walks, along with four strike outs. Before the Scots could close out the inning a Jamie Vesciglio (Jr./Stratford, Conn.) single and passed ball gave Albertus Magnus the 5-4 lead. Gordon was unable to produce on the offensive end in the bottom of the inning and came up short with the Falcons on top 5-4.

Freshman second baseman Kiersten Bieren(Groton, Mass.) and Pepper each went 3-4 from the batter’s box with Unumb contributing a pair of hits of her own.

Jackie Medina (Fr./Bridgeport, Conn.) faced four batters in her only inning pitched, allowing one hit and striking out one. Pitcher Melissa Manning (Jr./Milford, Conn.) threw six innings and allowed 11 hits and four runs, while walking one and striking out three.

Having closed out their spring training, both teams head home before beginning games a week from today on Friday March 15. The Scots open their conference play with a double header at Wentworth slated for 3:30 p.m., while the Falcons are also on the road at Suffolk on the same day at 5:00 p.m.
