ENC Shuts Out Scots In CCC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WENHAM, MA— The Lions of Eastern Nazarene proved to be too much for Gordon as they shut out the Scots 6-0 and 7-0, in today’s doubleheader. With the pair of wins the Lions move 4-10 on the season and 2-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while Gordon is drops to 4-8 and 2-2, respectively.

Leading the Lions was shortstop Sterling Marino (Fr./North Kingstown, R.I.) who went 5-7 on the day with a three-run homerun in game two. Pitching two complete games for ENC was sophomore Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) who allowed just four hits in the doubleheader.

Game one was a tight race with neither team able to cross the plate through the first four innings. The first inning seemed promising for the Scots as they loaded the bases on singles from Rachel Ryder (So./Telford, Pa.) and Marissa Meenan (Fr./Wayne, Pa.), but the Lions managed to escape the inning unscathed.

Each team tallied just one more hit until the fifth inning when Eastern Nazarene broke open the game, scoring all six of their runs. With the bases loaded and two outs veteran outfielder Jamie Block (Sr./Pembroke, Mass.) singled to center field to bring in the first run for the Eastern Nazarene. A heads up play from ENC’s Cayla Clinkscale (Jr./Winchendon, Mass.), who reached on a dropped third strike, kept the inning alive for the Lions. From there a two RBI-single from Marino and RBI- singles from Sorensen and Abigail Moore (Jr./Sheridan, Calif.) put ENC on top 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Although the Scots were able to hold Eastern Nazarene for the remainder of the game, in their final three at-bats Gordon could not put together any offensive momentum and thus ceded the 6-0 loss to the Lions.. Sorensen allowed three hits and fanned nine to get the win over the Scots.

Again in game two a lack of offensive power for the Scots proved their demise as ENC out-hit Gordon 8-1 in the 7-0 shutout.

Scoring their first two runs in the second off singles from Sorensen and Olivia Tovar (So./Coarsgold, Calif.) in the second and fourth innings, Eastern Nazarene then showed their depth using small ball to plate two runs in the sixth. Three of the Lions’ eight hits in the second half of the doubleheader came from Marino, who knocked in their final three runs with a homer to left center in the seventh inning.

Sorensen was again solid on the mound for the Lions, allowing just one hit in the bottom of the seventh, while striking out eight and walking one.

Gordon goes back at it tomorrow as they host the University of New England in a conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30p.m. and ENC plays again at home Saturday March 29, taking on UMaine Farmington at 1:00p.m. and 3:00p.m.
