WENHAM, MA— In Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action today the Nor’easters of the University of New England overpowered the Fighting Scots 9-0 and 19-8 to move to 8-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference.
In game one of the doubleheader Big Blue was led by Allie Frazier (Jr./Tewksbury, Mass.) and Adrienne Chase (So./Holden, Mass.) who each tallied two hits and two RBIs in the five inning shutout. On the mound for UNE was Chelsea Damon (Fr./Scarborough, Maine), who pitched a complete game allowing just five hits while striking out as many.
For the Scots, junior pitchers
Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) and
Kelly Beardslee (Thomaston, Conn.) split time on the mound, throwing three innings and two innings, respectively. Gordon gave up only six hits, but with six walks and a lack of offense the Scots were kept at bay throughout the first game.
Game two looked to be more of the same for the Nor’easters as they jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. After scoring two runs in the first, UNE scored four more on two hits and RBIs from Erin Grover (Sr./Biddeford, Maine), Chase, and Gabrielle LaRoche (So./Deerfield, N.H.) in the second inning.
With no answer from the Scots, Big Blue developed an overwhelming lead as they went on to score six runs in the top of the third to give them a 12-0 advantage. In the bottom of the same inning, a triple from freshman outfielder Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) finally put the Scots on the board as she knocked in
Rachel Ryder (So./Telford, Pa.) and
Kara Pepper (So./Wyckoff, N.J.).
With three more runs from UNE in the following two innings, it looked like the game was set to end in five, but the Scots were not giving up yet. Ryder started off the fifth inning with a solo shot to right field that bounced off the top of the fence and out. This gave Gordon the momentum as an error and an RBI-single through the right side from Meenan kept the Scots rolling. The Nor’easters managed to get two outs but with two runners on, a double from
Brie Roberts (So./Chocorua, N.H.) brought around
Hannah Towers (So./Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and put the score at 15-5. From there an RBI single from freshman
Gianna Palermo (Hope, R.I) and a double that scored two from classmate
Alyss Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) brought the Scots within seven to extend the game another inning.
Despite Gordon’s best efforts in the fifth inning, another four runs from UNE in the top of the sixth put the game out of reach, 19-8. With the loss the Scots drop to 4-10 on the year (2-4 CCC).
For the Nor’easters Meghan Bolano (Fr./Wakefield, R.I.) went 3-4 at the plate, while teammates Jess Lemos (Fr./Chelmsford, Mass.) and Lauren Doneski (Fr./Waltham, N.H.) had a pair of hits apiece. Meenan shined for the Scots, going 2-3 with three RBIs, while Ryder, Unumb, and
Kendall Bukuras (Jr./North Falmouth, Mass.) each chipped in two hits as well.
Both teams take the weekend off as the Scots get back to the diamond on Tuesday April 2 hosting UMaine Farmington for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30p.m., while UNE plays Eastern Nazarene at 3:00p.m on Wednesday April 3.
