WENHAM, MA—The Golden Bears of
Western New England move to 8-2 in the
Commonwealth Coast Conference and 17-12 overall with a pair of wins over the Fighting Scots of Gordon College, who drop to 2-10 and 7-18, respectively.
After the Golden Bears capitalized using small ball and speed on the bases to score Maria Francese (Jr./Hinsdale, Mass.), a single through the right side from Gordon’s
Rachel Ryder (So./Telford, Pa.) and an RBI-double from
Kendall Bukuras (Jr./North Falmouth, Mass.) set the score at an even 1-1, after the first inning of the day.
From there though, Western New England pitcher Lauren Zambrana (So./Wallingford, Conn.) closed out the game allowing just one more hit for the Scots while helping her cause at the plate with a double. RBIs from Alexis Bukowski (Fr./Wallingford, Conn.) and Samantha Mulhern (So./Worcester, Mass.) gave the Golden Bears the 4-1 victory in game one.
Game two was led by senior Laura Madaio (Paxton, Mass.) whose two hits both left the park with six RBIs from a home run and grand slam. Francese chipped in three hits on three at bats with one RBI to help the Golden Bears to the 9-0 win over the Scots.
Western New England’s Freshman pitcher Leah Torre (Guilford, Conn.) moves to 4-6 on the season, allowing four hits while striking out as many in four innings of work. Carolyn Hajdusek (So./Northfield, N.H.) came in for the final inning, recording two strikeouts, to finish the game for the Golden Bears.
Gordon continues their CCC campaign as they travel to take on Nichols on Monday, April 15 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00p.m., while WNE heads back to the diamond on Tuesday, April 16 against nonconference opponent Smith College.
