In non-conference softball action today, the Fighting Scots of Gordon College took two games from the Regis College Pride to improve to 10-19 overall on the year. The losses set Regis back to 9-19.
Gordon’s
Marissa Meenan (Fr./Wayne, Pa.) went 3-for-3 in game one to help the Scots to the doubleheader sweep.
In the first inning of game one, Gordon jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a double from Meenan set up designated player
Skylar Bareford (Jr./Stonington, Conn.) to bring in two runs.
Kara Pepper (So./Wycoff, N.J.) knocked in the final run of the inning with an RBI-single.
The Scots would stretch their lead to 5-0 with a run in each the fifth and the sixth innings but the Pride refused to go down without a fight, putting on their rally caps and going to work with two down in the seventh. Singles from Kirbie Garvey (Fr./Littleton, Mass.) and Jill Bruning (So./Medford, Mass.) and a triple from Samantha Bliss (So./Framingham, Mass.) notched the first two runs for the Pride, while a two-run homerun from Haley Fountain (Fr./Warren, Mass.) brought Regis within one. Bareford came in to relieve junior pitcher
Kelly Beardslee (Thomaston, Conn.) to record the save, giving the Scots the 5-4 victory.
Game two went the way of the Scots, who scored all six of their runs in the second inning. Pepper went 2-for-3 with an RBI,
Gianna Palermo (Fr./Hope, R.I.) knocked in two, while Bareford and Meenan added one apiece.
Regis’ only runs of game two would come in the third inning off a Bruning single that helped two Pride runners cross the plate. Bruning went 2-for-3 in game two, while Garvey added two hits for Regis.
Gordon returns to play tomorrow, April 19 at Salve Regina for a conference twinbill set for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., while Regis gets back to action on the same day hosting Newbury for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
