Box Score 1
Gordon College’s Fighting Scots bested the Beavers of UMaine Farmington in game one of today’s nonconference doubleheader, while game two was suspended in the fourth inning due to darkness. With the victory the Scots move to 5-10 on the season while the Beavers fall to 2-1 in their young campaign.
Leading the way for the Scots was junior
Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) going 6-8 on the day with eight RBIs including a walk-off double in the first game.
In game one left fielder Emily Soule (Fr./Chelsea, Maine) and first baseman Shelby Bryant (Fr./South Portland, Maine) each went 3-4 to help the Beavers register seven runs on 14 hits.
Pitchers Emma Vaillancourt (Jr./Saco, Maine) and Kaitlyn Bartlett (Sr./Chesterville, Maine) split time on the mound for UMaine giving up a total of eight hits while striking out 12 and walking seven. Bareford pitched a complete game for the Scots tallying six strikeouts.
A well-matched first six innings left the Scots with a 6-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. A single from Soule and walk to put Michelle Cote (So./Arundal, Maine) on base brought up Amy Jones (Jr./Augusta, Maine) who used a single up the left field line to tie the game at 6-6. Before the Scots could close out the inning the Beavers took advantage of a passed ball to gain the lead, 7-6.
Junior shortstop
Kendall Bukuras (North Falmouth, Mass.) got down to business with a double to the center field fence to start things for the Scots in the seventh. After UMF recorded two outs, patience at the plate from sophomores
Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.) and
Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) loaded the bases with two walks. Bareford took advantage of the situation and ripped a two-RBI-double to center field to lift the Scots to the 8-7 win over the Beavers.
Despite ending game two after just four innings due to darkness, the Scots rallied to end the game on top 9-4. Heading into to the bottom of the third trailing 3-2, the Scots woke up their bats, scoring seven runs on seven hits with RBIs coming from
Alyssa Unumb (Fr./Bedford, Mass.),
Brie Roberts (So./Chocorua, N.H.), Pepper, and three from Bareford. With the Beavers only able to answer with one run in the top of the fourth, play was suspended before the game could be completed.
The Scots get back in action on tomorrow April 3 as they travel to take on Commonwealth Coast Conference foe, Endicott with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00p.m. UMaine hosts Thomas College on the same day for a pair of games at 2:00p.m. and 4:00p.m.
