WENHAM, MA—Gordon College’s junior pitcher
Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) threw two complete games, allowing just four hits and striking out eight, while helping her cause on offense going 6-for-7, leading the Fighting Scots to a pair of 8-0 victories over the Falcons of Fisher College. With the wins Gordon closes out the regular season with a record of 13-22 overall and 4-14 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), as the Falcons fall to 2-25 in the 2013 campaign.
Despite holding the Scots to just one run through the fourth inning, Fisher struggled to gain any offensive momentum and Gordon took advantage in the fifth. After
Marissa Meenan (Fr./Wayne, Pa.) stole her way around the bases, Bareford knocked her in with a double to left center and then scored on a long fly ball from
Kara Pepper (So./Wyckoff, N.J.). Freshman third baseman,
Gianna Palermo (Hope, R.I.) singled up the middle to score the Scots’ final run of the inning to give them a 4-0 lead over Fisher.
In the top of the sixth Jayla Vega (Fr./Hoboken, N.J.) tallied one of her two hits of the game for the Falcons, but tight defense from the Scots closed out the inning without any harm done.
A strong offensive effort in the bottom of the sixth for Gordon would end the game early as they scored an additional four runs. Back-to-back singles from
Shannon Dodds (Jr./Audobon, Pa.) and
Rachel Ryder (So./Telford, Pa.) set up Meenan for a two-RBI single up the middle to set the game at 6-0 Gordon. Pepper and classmate
Hannah Towers (So./Valley Cottage, N.Y.) would go on to bring in the final two runs, with singles to center field and left field, respectively to give Gordon the 8-0 decision.
Game two was more of the same with the Scots coming alive in the third and fourth innings. Ryder and Pepper both went 2-for-3 in game two, tallying two RBIs apiece in the shutout, while Meenan, Bareford, and Palermo each added RBIs. The team effort boosted the Scots to another 8-0 advantage, this time in five innings.
The Scots begin their CCC playoff run on Saturday April 27 as they travel to Salve Regina for a 1:00p.m. start in the play-in phase, while Fisher closes out their season on the road at UMaine Presque Isle with a doubleheader on the same day at 12:00p.m.
