Scots Break Individual And School Bests At CCC Championship


Hosting the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Track & Field Championship today at the Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots saw several individual and school records fall as they competed against the conference's best in preparation for the upcoming DIII New England Championship.

On the men's side, Kola Olateju broke the Gordon record and took first place on the day in the long jump with a 6.27m (20' 6.75") effort, while teammate Chris Warne set a new school mark and took second in the shot put with an 11.66m (38' 3") toss. Warne and Olateju also recorded second place finishes in the hammer (31.35 (102' 10.25")) and 100m (11.78), respectively, and Warne turned in a fourth-place, 31.87m (104' 6.5") in the discus.

Additionally, Wes Nelson took home second in the grueling 3000m steeplechase with a 10:49.50 finish, and David Popa grabbed second in the discus with a 37.43 (122' 9.5") effort, third in the 100m (11.92) and 200m (24.42), and fourth in the long jump (5.43m (17' 9.75").

Rounding out the men's effort with third place finishes were Brian Cartularo in the long jump (5.56m (18' 2.75")), Ryan Williamson in the hammer throw (28.54m (93' 7.5")), and Aidan Lukas in the javelin (36.12m (118' 6")), while Chris Lewin recorded fourth place in the javelin (35.16m (115' 4.25")).

For the women, Leanna D'Alfonso bested the day's competition and reset the Gordon bar in the 400m with an impressive 1:01.68, and Megan Azadian recorded the Scots' only other first in the shot put with an 8.94m (29' 3.75") throw. Emily Caren also had a standout day for the host Scots, turning in second place results in the shot put (8.93m (29' 3.5")) and discus (25.13m (82' 5.25")) and third place in the hammer (28.02m (91' 11")). Edging Caren for second place in the hammer was Kagan Magnoli with a 28.09m (92' 1.75"), while Sarah Warne took third in the 400m hurdles at 1:26.68 and Leanna D'Alfonso replaced the Gordon record in the 400m with a 1:01.68.

The Scots will travel for the DIII New England Championship hosted by Colby College on May 3 and 4.
