Scots Open Outdoor Season At Corsair Invitational

The Fighting Scots opened their 2013 outdoor track and field schedule today against top New England athletes at the Corsair Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth, the women finishing 10th of 14 and the men finishing 13th of 13 on the day.

For the women, Jessica Fittro bested all runners in her debut in the 10,000m at 41:33.79 to qualify for the NCAA DIII New England Championship. Elizabeth Norcini also posted a strong effort for the Scots at 5th in the 5000m run (20:44.72), while Samantha Goedeke and Leanna D'Alfonso registered 6th and 7th in the 800m (2:39.68) and 400m (1:04.10), respectively. Additionally, Thais Ziegenhals (5:37.44), Hannah Fisher (5:39.87), and Mariah Geiger (5:49.71) finished one after the other in the 1500m at 11th, 12th, and 13th in the 17-runner field.

In throwing events, Emily Caren took 10th of 21 in the javelin with a 26.29m toss and teammate Kagan Magnoli broke the Gordon record in the hammer by over two feet for 12th place (29.22m).

On the men's side, Kola Olateju was the highest placing Scot on the day, taking 6th in the long jump at 5.92. Wes Nelson and Andrew Kwiatkowski recorded back-to-back finishes in the grueling 10,000m run, Nelson at 8th with a 35:07.37 and Kwiatkowski just behind in 9th at 35:08.18.

David Popa also showed well for Gordon at 25th in the 200m dash (24.66) and 26th in the 100m dash (12.25), while teammate Christopher Lewin followed closely behind in the 100m in 27th at 12.32.

The Scots are back in action next Friday, April 12 at Eastern Connecticut State University.
