HENNIKER, N.H. –Salve Regina women's cross-country runners took four of the first ten finishes capturing first place in the Mayflower Kickoff hosted by New England College Friday evening. The Seahawks were followed by Husson University in second and fellow North Atlantic Conference (NAC) school Colby-Sawyer College in third.
Leading the way for the women was Amy Irving (Bohemia, N.Y.) who finished the 5K race in a time of 19:28. Irving was followed closely by Seahawk teammate Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.) who clocked in with a time of 19:32 and Babson College's Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) who finished in 19:49.
In the men's race Babson College would take first place for the third straight year. The Beavers were followed closely by the Fighting Scots, while fellow Commonwealth Coast Conference school Salve Regina University was a close third.
Leading the way for the men was Mark Gulesian who picked up his third victory in three season at the Mayflower Meet running the 5K race in a time of 16:09. Gordon's Neal Hulstein (Ellington, Conn.) finished second with a time of 16:15 followed by Colby-Sawyer's Benjamin Bunnell (St. Johnsbury, Vt.)
Wes Nelson also finished in the top 10 for the Fighting Scots with a time of 17:03, which was good enough for eighth place overall. Nathan Swaim (15th), Jed Meyers (32nd) and Liam Adams (38th) rounded out the top five on the men's side.
For the women, Jessica Fittro finished as the top runner for the Scots with a time of 21:25. Hannah Laue and Mary Beth Gray were not far behind to lead the scoring for Gordon on the afternoon.
