GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) scored the game's only goal nearly eight minutes into overtime to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday in the second day of play of the season-opening USM Women's Soccer Invitational.
A day removed from finding the back of the net nine times against Thomas College, Gordon's offense had a tougher time manuvering against the disciplined Huskies.
The Huskies frustrated the Fighting Scots through regulation time as senior goalie Katie Cobb (Lewiston, Maine) played an outstanding game. Cobb made nine saves in regulation, including two game-saving tips over the crossbar late in the first half.
Late in the first overtime, sophomore Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) won a ball on the right side and made a hard run to the end line. Breton got around the corner against a USM defender and placed a pass to the top of the six-yard box where Midwinter slotted home a right-footed shot for her second goal of the season.
The goal was Midwinter's second of the tournament and she is now tied with Breton for the team lead in points. Each player has totaled two goals and two assists through as many games.
Gordon senior goalkeeper Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) was called upon to make three saves to earn her second win and first complete-game shutout of the season.
Gordon piled up a 22-8 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in the corner kicks. The Fighting Scots are 2-0 after the weekend. The Huskies fall to 1-1.
The Fighting Scots return to the pitch on Wednesday for their home opener for the 2013 season. Gordon will face a tough WPI team who coincidentally won their first game of the year by the score of 9-0.
