BIDDEFORD, Maine – Freshman Neil Hulstein (Ellington, Conn.) and sophomore Wes Nelson (Charlton, Mass.) each finished in the top 10, pacing the Scots to a fourth-place finish at the UNE Invitational on Saturday morning. Leanne Beedle (Bethany, Conn.) finished 30
th overall to spur the Women's Cross Country team to a fifth-place mark in the same event.
Hulstein could not defend his CCC Runner of the Week and Rookie of the Week titles last week due to the team having an off week. However, the first-year hurried his way to a third place finish out of 123 runners in the race and was the first conference runner to cross the end line.
Five conference teams, including Gordon had runners registered in the race.
The freshman finished with a time of 26:54 and should be a candidate for another conference honor this week.
Not to be outdone, Wes Nelson finished six spots behind his teammate with a time of 27:44. Jed Meyers (Medford, N.J.), Andrew Manning (Amman, Jordan) and Liam Adams (Woodstock, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for the Scots.
On the women's side, Beedle navigated the hilly course for a time of 21:29 and paced the Gordon scoring. Not far behind Beedle, Hanna Laue (Redlands, Calif.) and Mary Beth Gray (Gaffney, S.C.) finished within seven seconds of each other to take second and third for the squad.
Sarah Warne (Andover, Mass.) and Allie Balloveras (Freeport, N.Y.) each crossed the finish line less than a minute after Gray to complete the scoring for Gordon.
The women finished fifth overall in the team competition—just behind CCC foes, Endicott and UNE.
Gordon will be back on the trails next Saturday for the teams' only home event of the season. The annual Pop Crowell Invitational gets underway next weekend at 10:45 on Gordon's woodland course.
