Scots Claim CCC Opener 5-0 Over Western New England

Box Score
Playing host to Western New England University today in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener, the Fighting Scots notched their third straight in the win column with a commanding 5-0 result over the Golden Bears to improve to 5-1 overall on the year.

Gordon cruised to the win behind a balanced scoring effort as senior Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) recorded a goal and two assists, senior Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) netted two, and sophomores Shelby Palafox (Lexington, Mass.) and Lauren Hayes (Wantage, N.J.) chipped in one apiece. Adding assists on the day were junior Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and sophomore Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.), while sophomore keeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) turned away five in her second consecutive win.

McSherry wasted little time putting the Scots on the board with what proved to be the gamewinner, heading in a Woudenberg bending ball from the corner flag for the 1-0 lead just five minutes in. That duo connected again in nearly the exact same fashion at the 24:04 mark, with McSherry finishing off a Woudenberg corner serve to give Gordon the 2-0 advantage.

Then, just three minutes later, Palafox seized her opportunity to net her first collegiate goal and extend the Scots' lead, making an overlapping run out of the backfield and driving a ball from the corner of the 18 past the outstretched hands of WNE netminder Briana Kubik (So./Blandford, Mass.) to make it 3-0.

That score held until the opening minutes of the second frame when Woudenberg collected a Midwinter pass and ripped a shot from the top left of the area over the Golden Bears' Abigail Hunt (So./Pittsfield, Mass.) to widen the gap further to 4-0.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Breton made an attacking run down the right side and knocked the ball in to a waiting Hayes, who sent home her third of the year to give the Scots their fifth and final tally of the outing.

Kubik recorded six saves in the effort for the Golden Bears, who drop to an even 3-3 overall with the loss.

The Scots return to their non-conference agenda on Wednesday, September 18 as they host the Judges of Brandeis University at 4 p.m. WNE will welcome Mount Holyoke on Tuesday, September 17 for a 4:30 p.m. start.
