Midwinter Nets Two As Scots Down No. 8 Brandeis, 3-2

Box Score
In non-conference women's soccer action today on Gordon's Quad, junior midfielder Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) netted the first and last goals of the day to lead the Fighting Scots past the No. 8 ranked Judges of Brandeis University, 3-2.

The win improves the Scots to an impressive 6-1 overall on the season while the Judges, who were ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 1 in New England in the latest NSCAA poll, suffer their first loss of the season (5-1).

Also adding to the scoresheet on the day for Gordon was sophomore forward Lauren Hayes (Wantage, N.J.) with a single tally, while senior midfielder Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) dished two assists and sophomore midfielder Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) and senior back Julia Miller (New York, N.Y.) added one assist apiece. Sophomore keeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) kept her record unblemished at 3-0 with an 11-save effort.

Kelly Peterson (Sr./Houston, Texas) and Dara Spital (Jr./Miami, Fla.) recorded one goal each for Brandeis in the outing, while netminder Michelle Savuto (Jr./Ridgewood, N.J.) is tabbed with the loss.

After a feverish start, the Scots got the scoring started on the day when Woudenberg beat her defender to the left endline and slotted a ball through the area to Midwinter for the 1-0 lead just 13 minutes in. Not to be outdone, Peterson wasted little time netting the equalizer, sending home a loose ball off a corner just three minutes later to make it 1-1.

Gordon then booked the go-ahead goal in the 29th minute as Breton volleyed a Woudenberg cross across the goal mouth to Hayes at the far post, who tucked the ball into the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage. That lead once again was short lived, however, as the Judges' second-leading scorer Spital ripped a shot from the far left corner of the box past Dion to knot the game at 2-2 with 10 minutes to go in the first.

Despite quality opportunities by both teams throughout the remainder of the first and into the second, that score held until the 81st minute when Miller cleared a ball out of the backfield to Midwinter, who beat one defender, took aim, and buried the gamewinner to the right post past the outstretched hands of Savuto.

The Scots look to keep their win streak going as they host conference opponent Salve Regina on Saturday, September 21 at 12 p.m. Brandeis will host Wellesley on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m.
