Men's Cross Country Trots to Fifth-Place Finish at Pop Crowell

WENHAM, Mass. – The University of New England Women's Cross Country team took the top spot in the 2013 Pop Crowell Invitational by having their top five runners finish amongst the first 12 to cross the finish line. On the men's side, Georgia College, won the team competition despite the long trip up to Massachusetts from Millegeville, Georgia. The Bobcats placed five runners in the top 10 to win going away.
 
Defending CCC Runner of the Week, UNE's Brittney Sorbello, was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 20:16. Sorbello out-sprinted Georgia College's, Lena White, who finished exactly one second behind the Nor'easters top finisher.
 
The Nor'easters finished with 35 points, while Georgia College came in second with a team score of 46 points. Emmanuel College (MA) was a distant third with 113 points on the morning.
 
In the men's race, James Ryden from Georgia College was the top finisher to lead the Bobcats to the overall victory. His time of 28:08 in the 5-mile race was a few seconds faster than Nacho Hernando from the New Hampshire Technological Institute. Neal Hulstein, a freshman for host Gordon College finished in third, just six seconds behind Hernando.
 
Georgia College took home the Pop Crowell crown with Bobcat runners finishing first, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth overall. UNE was not far behind, grabbing 68 total points and two top 10 finishers. As on the women's side, the Emmanuel men also finished in third place with a score of 92.
 
The Gordon men's squad finished fifth overall with a team score of 171 points. Wes Nelson (31st) and Jed Meyers (49th) rounded out the top three finishers for the Scots. The Women finished seventh out of 18 teams registered for the race and were led by Leanne Beedle. Hanna Laue, Allie Balloveras, Yochabel Antunes and Sarah Warne all finished within a few spots of each other to notch the scoring for the Scots.
