Scots Grind Out Pivotal CCC Match at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I.—The Gordon Women's Tennis team checked another accomplishment off their list for the 2013 season by defeating Salve Regina 6-3 on the road. The Seahawks have had the Scots number in each of the last six seasons, but a focused Gordon squad fought through several three-set matches, to pull out the victory.

Gordon gained confidence early in the match, as Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.) and Cindi Flynn (Sunset Beach, Calif.), rolled to an 8-0 win at first doubles. However, the other two doubles matches proved to be much closer.

Jessie Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) and Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) got out to a hot start in their third doubles match, but Liz Ligouri and Taylor Amendola battled back to take a lead at 5-4. Not to be dismayed, Gordon's third flight won four straight games to close out the match 8-5 in the Scots favor.

The Seahawks were able to get a point back at second doubles. Kasey Walther and Emma Gruber overcame an early deficit to put down the Scots' second duo, 8-6.

Hall gave the Scots their third point of the match with a straight-set victory of Walther at first singles. The win improves the freshman to 11-1 in singles play and 5-1 in CCC competition.

Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) battled through a tight second set and defeated Gina Gilbert 6-1, 6-4 to bring the Scots within a point of the overall match victory. Yeaw improved to 7-5 in singles play this season.

Salve Regina brought the match score back to 3-2 when Gruber bounced Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) at third singles, 6-3, 6-2.

The final three matches were all decided in three sets, as the final win eluded the Scots for a short time. Junior co-captain Hannah Damon (Mystic, Conn.) went down early in the third set, but she outpaced opponent—Amendola—the rest of the way to clinch the win for the Scots. Damon gutted out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at sixth singles.

Gordon and Salve split the final two matches to end the overall score at 6-3. Flynn won a third-set tiebreaker 10-7 to defeat Elizabeth DiFilippo at fourth singles. Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) played one of her best matches of the year in a three-set loss to Ligouri at the fifth flight.

The Scots (7-5) have the Homecoming weekend off before returning to action on Wednesday with another important match, against Western New England at home.
