Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—The Gordon Women's Soccer team scored in the 4
th minute of the contest with visiting Eastern Nazarene and that was all of the offense they would need. Gordon kept the talented Lions' offense at bay for 90 minutes and hung on for the 1-0 victory in front of a large Homecoming crowd.
Entering the day, Gordon and Eastern Nazarene found themselves tied atop the conference standings. Both teams entered with identical 8-1 records and were undefeated in CCC play. Regardless of result, the winning team would really have to earn the chance to stay ahead of the league.
Gordon's outside-inside offense found results immediately, as the Scots moved the ball down the field with surprising ease.
The Scots got their first chance less than four minutes into the game on a corner kick taken by Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.). Woundenberg's free kick found its way into the scrum and Stephanie Bouillon (Greenville, N.Y.) ended up with the ball. Bouillon used a heady play to get the ball past Kristen Farley, to give the Scots an early 1-0 lead.
It was Bouillon's second goal of the season, while Woudenberg continues to pile up assists—dishing her ninth of the year.
Sophomore keeper McKenzie Dion remains one of the big stories for the Scots 9-1 start to the year. Dion was called upon in Gordon's lone loss in 2013 after their top two keepers on the depth chart were lost for the season due to injury. She has allowed only two goals since that game and wracked up a .927 save percentage.
Dion kept the Lions off the scoreboard time and again, despite being peppered by 13 shots. The Lions outshot Gordon 13-5 on the afternoon, but the sophomore keeper came up with six huge saves to keep them out of the net.
Gordon relied on a fortified defense to keep the score at 1-0 for the 86 minutes following their early goal and weathered to storm to improve to 3-0 in conference play.
Farley made one save in the loss for the Lions, while Dion improves to 6-0 for the year.
The Scots have another test on Tuesday with a non-conference matchup with Emerson at home. Eastern Nazarene (8-2, 1-1 CCC) remains on the road, but have the full week to gear up for a ranked Roger Williams team next Saturday.
