WENHAM, Mass. – Newcomers Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.) and Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) won clinching matches in singles to defeat visiting Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday afternoon at the Brigham Tennis Courts. The two freshmen won their first collegiate matches to pace the narrow victory over the Chargers in the team's season opener.
A lot of new faces graced the opening day lineup for head coach Peter Amadon. An offseason of successful recruiting led to a class of six freshmen and a transfer—all of who will have a direct impact on the box score for the 2013 season.
Colby-Sawyer got on the board first with a swift victory at first doubles. Liz Lincoln and Ashlyn Ramsay found a groove early against Hall and fellow freshman Cindi Flynn (Sunset Beach, Calif.). Hall and Flynn were never able to recover from a 6-1 deficit in their first match playing as a team, eventually falling to the talented Charger duo 8-3.
Gordon's second doubles lineup of Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) found themselves on the right side of a grueling match. Colby-Sawyer's No. 2 team battled with the Scots, but Yeaw and Drescher were able to keep them at an arm's length for a 8-6 victory to grab the team's first point.
Senior captain Jessie Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Liann Van Volkinburg (Chillicothe, Ohio) also came through for the Scots at the third spot. Dupre and Volkingburg displayed good chemistry en route to a 8-5 victory over their opponents.
With Gordon leading 2-1 after doubles, the two teams set their sights to capturing team victory in singles.
Oxana Tkachenko evened up the match score with a victory over Flynn, but Gordon retook the lead when Hall dispatched Lincoln 6-2, 6-1 at first singles. Only a few minutes later Hannah Damon (Mystic, Conn.) won her first match of the year at sixth singles by an identical score, 6-2, 6-1.
The Scots led 4-2, but the Chargers were not out of the fight just yet. Ramsay and Charlotte Horton won straight-set matches at the second and third flights respectively.
With the deciding match coming down to fifth singles, Levy was able to pull through in a tight second set to grab the clinching match 6-2, 7-5 over Ellen Graham.
The Fighting Scots are back in action on Thursday when Bridgewater State travels onto campus. The Bears defeated the Scots a season ago 9-0 and Gordon will seek to even the series.
