Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scots Can't Catch Leopards in CCC Action

BOSTON, Mass.—Gordon Women's Basketball dropped its second straight Commonwealth Coast Conference contest on the road at Wentworth, 52-46. The Fighting Scots received a 16-point effort from Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and outrebounded the host Leopards by double-digits, but a scoreless stretch in the second half hurt their comeback chances in the end. Gordon falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in the CCC.

The Fighting Scots continued their series of strong defensive play under new head coach Corey Laster, locking down the Wentworth offense in the early going. On the other end, Gordon struggled to find any consistency with ball control and turned possession over 12 times in the first period alone.

Neither team looked to gain any traction in the opening 10 minutes, as Wentworth clung to a 13-10 lead through the first quarter of the game. Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) generated most of Gordon's offense during the first stretch, hitting two of her first three attempts from behind the arch to keep the Scots within striking distance. However, the long stretches of no scoring which has plagued the team at times this season reared its head in the middle of the half. Between the 12th and fourth minutes, Gordon could only muster three points while the Leopards opened a five-point advantage.

Kratche and Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) broke the scoreless streak by making layups on three of four possessions over the next two minutes. With their lead trimmed to two points, the Leopards responded with a small run of their own and make it a 25-19 game with under a minute to play. Gordon closed the half with made layups by Kratche and Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) to trail 25-23 at the break.

Linnell gave the Scots their first lead of the game with 18:39 remaining in the second half at 26-25. The two teams then traded buckets back and forth for the next six minutes when the Scots endured another lengthy scoring drought. After going up 35-34, Wentworth scored nine straight points over a five-minute span to open a 10-point lead.

Gordon could never recover. A triple by Vetere brought the Scots back within six points with exactly a minute to play, but they couldn't capitalize on a missed free throw by the Leopards to get any closer.

Kratche led all Gordon scorers with 16 points, while also collecting 10 rebounds. Linnell collected a game-high 13 boards to go along with nine points for the Fighting Scots.

Junior Rachael Camara led all scorers with 18 points—three makes from deep—and grabbed six steals for the Leopards. (Fall River, Mass.) Freshman Riselly Deoleo (Manchester, N.H.) also scored in double figures for Wentworth as she had 12 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Sophomore forward Kellie Messer (Hollis, N.H.) led the Leopards with 10 boards.

Gordon will look to break a four-game losing streak at home against Nichols on Tuesday night.
